Vegan couple manages to kill their child with malnutrition

Two vegans whose 11-month-old baby daughter died from vitamin deficiency after drinking only its mother’s milk have gone on trial in northern France, charged with child neglect.
Sergipe and Joel Le Moaligou, who eat no animal products, called the emergency services in March, 2008, when their baby Louise appeared listless.
By the time the ambulance arrived at their home in Saint-Maulvis, north of Paris, she was already dead.
Louise weighed just 12lb, compared to an average 17.5lb for a child her age, and was deathly pale.
An autopsy showed that Louise was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency, which experts say increases a child’s sensitivity to infections
French prosecutors allege the vitamin deficiency may have been linked to the mother’s diet, and say that the couple also failed to follow medical advice to hospitalise the baby, who was suffering from bronchitis…
“They preferred applying clay or cabbage poultices whose recipes they found in their books. These are people who read the wrong thing at the wrong time,” said Mr Daquo.
The parents are still vegan and “are completely aware of the mistake they made,” said the father’s lawyer, Patrick Quenel. If convicted, the couple could face up to 30 years in prison.
Religious nutballs commit this sort of stupidity upon their families all the time. Because this particular couples’ motivation was the “purity” of the nutritional program they chose doesn’t excuse the death of their child.

This is truly a sad story….I am vegitarian and you can raise healthy vegitarian and vegan children but you must be so on top of nutrition and giving your kids vitamins. I am also for healty alternatives in medicine as well but hey when I am sick I want to get well…truly sad they should have taken their child to the hospital…..

True. We’re omnivores. If one cares to focus on just half of the range of stuff we ate while evolving you have to take the time to achieve some kind of complete nutritional balance. That requires some system of supplements.

Vegans beware, if you need to take vitamins and supplements, then, just by this fact alone you should realize that veganism is not for humans. I believe that supplementation can be useful-BUT- only when most all(99.9 percent) of your dietary needs are met by eating REAL FOOD-and then you may optimize your health by adding a bit of supplementation. Veganism is an erroneous mode of thinking, you’re attempting, in vain, to deny what you are, your true nature. In the end, the denying/deprivation will cost you. Would a cat, eating and acting like a sparrow, survive? By the way, many vegans I know, eat very highly processed, artificial “food products”, in their lame attempt to make up in their diet what is missing due to lack of animal products. Veggies are great, raw and cooked, and so are a limited number of fruits, but, the main calorie intake must come from excellent sources of various meats, and yes, with the very necessary fats. It’s been this way for thousands of years, you can’t change it- deal with it, get over it!

@bobby..actually not true but I don’t have time to refute all you say..I’ll leave that for someone else on the board. I will simply state that protein once it is broken down in the body into amino acids is not differentiated by either animal or vegitable. All 21/22 amino acids can be found in the vegitable kingdom. It then becomes an issue of getting educated in actual nutrition and making sure that one consumes an adequate amount of protein…..that’s it for now..someone else run with the baton….

Or bacon?
You’re absolutely right. But, it takes education and consistent oversight to stay on top of compete proteins.
Bacon is easier.

Ivonne, humbly speaking, if you notice, in my post, not once did I use the word “protein”, because I know the standard responses to accusations of Vegans not getting enough protein. No Ivonne, It’s not just the protein, actually, the fact is that the fats are even more important( bit I digress). Also, if you notice, I did use the phrase “main calorie intake must come from EXCELLENT sources of meat”-BECAUSE, to repeat your words, to “get the 21/22 amino acids in adequate amounts”, would require to get an extraordinary of amount of starches (in the case of beans), or antinutrients (in the case of most nuts), or an OVERLOAD of fiber (in the case of greens, broccoli, spouted grains…I could go on and on). This is a fact, because, by looking at the percentages of protein compared to fiber/starches (and antinutrients) in these alternatives, you will see that the percantage of protein is mostly less than these other substances. Sure, you could always soak your nuts to get rid of some antinutrients…but why go through all this- nature prepacked the correct proportions of protein AND FAT in meats,- in a nice, neat, very assimilable package-nutrient and calorie dense- just what was required to put humans at the top of the food chain. The Vegan way is the long, zigzag way to get to a destination as oppsed to the short, direct route. But hey, if someone wants to be a vegan for religious and moral reasons, that’s fine with me, after all I don’t mind if people flog themselves or walk on glass due to their religion.
