Warning on oil sands and climate hidden by the Harper government

Internal government documents show that Canada’s scientific and environmental bureaucracy does not share the Conservative government’s view that oil sands projects in Alberta have relatively little negative impact on the environment.
Postmedia News, a publisher that owns several major Canadian newspapers including The National Post in Toronto, obtained the previously confidential material through Canada’s access-to-information laws.

Peter Kent, the environment minister, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have said that oil sands projects are being unfairly attacked by environmental groups that are exaggerating their effects. But in a a PowerPoint presentation, Environment Canada, the federal environmental agency, said that contamination of the Athabasca River, which flows north from the oils sands, is “a high-profile concern” and that that there are “questions about possible effects on health of wildlife and downstream communities.”
The presentation also noted that the increase in greenhouse gas emissions related to the oil sands would equal the increase in emissions from all other sources in Canada by 2020. And it raised concerns about other forms of air pollution from the projects.
Last week Mr. Kent announced that Canada was withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the time, he dismissed the contribution of oil sands to global climate change.
More conservatives dedicating their political deceit to Big Oil. Silly enough when both the American and Canadian flavor of Mammon-worshipers delude themselves with crap rationales about science – provided by pimps who hate and fear science. An extra quality of corruption is layered over deceit when they deliberately withhold information from the voting public.
Just because the end of the world as we know it seems to be papered over with petrodollars doesn’t mean we should ignore scumbag politicians and their demented games – enjoying the pleasures of profiteering.

“…relatively little negative impact on the environment.”????? This is one of the most destructive projects on the planet! Oh, the lies, the lies…. And to state that by passing the Keystone XL will create jobs (which is true) but is also misleading. Should we start converting our country to green energy, more jobs will be created in doing so. Solar cells, for example, must be manufactured, must be installed, must be maintained…. Going green, regardless of the green energy source, will bring so many jobs since we are relatively starting anew here. And the Koch Bros’ can afford to start up this new line of energy. Oh, but wait… they will not profit near as much as they will on oil. Oh, yeah… that little problem…..
