Argument over care for cancer patient ends in murders and suicide

leave a comment »

Logan, Ohio — A man repeatedly shot his adult son and two sisters-in-law in his living room, killing them in front of his terminally ill wife, then fatally shot himself on the front porch as family tension about the cancer-stricken woman’s care apparently boiled over…

An earlier dispute about whether the woman should have been fed tea and toast or the orange her husband had peeled for her apparently set off the shooter Monday, 63-year-old Paul Gilkey…

The sick woman, 59-year-old Darlene Gilkey, witnessed the shootings from a hospital bed in her living room but wasn’t injured, the sheriff said. The family friction escalated into violence in the evening when Paul Gilkey went to a bedroom, retrieved a semiautomatic handgun and began threatening relatives, North said…

Gilkey, known as David or Dave because he went by his middle name, served a decade in prison beginning in 1974 for killing a man in Athens County in May of that year, according to court records. He also had a 1986 arrest for felonious assault, according to the sheriff…

Which didn’t keep him from having a gun in the house.

Darlene Gilkey was receiving hospice care through a company in nearby Lancaster, whose chief executive declined to comment Tuesday because of privacy restrictions. Investigators said she was taken to a hospital after the shootings rattled the normally quiet area.

I’m never surprised when people do something crazy and criminal. I am perpetually astounded over the candyass and cowardly politicians who are so cowed by the NRA and nutballs whose guns are grafted replacements for their sexual organs.

I’ve been a hunter and a gun owner most of my life. The easiest time for me to acquire guns was when I was a teenage gang member. In the 1960′s I would shoot at the same gun club that Lee Harvey Oswald had belonged to.

As a former handgun hunter, I still love target shooting – but, blogging and photography are much higher priorities; so, I haven’t spent any money in a gun shop since the last century. I have always been ready to process whatever reasonable state and federal requirements the law might require over this life of mine with guns. I have little respect for the nutballs who make gun ownership some kind of holy crusade, a religion for fundamentalist mice.

RTFA for the details.

Florida 911 caller says toddler shot and killed his mom

leave a comment »

Police found a woman fatally shot in her Miramar apartment Wednesday evening, after receiving a 911 call in which someone said the woman’s toddler son somehow pulled the trigger.

Officers were interviewing a man who may know what happened, said Tania Rues, Miramar police spokeswoman.

Police would not identify the shooting victim until family members were notified. They also would not say what type of gun was fired.

Neighbors said at about 7 p.m. they heard one gunshot in an apartment in the Ashlar complex in the 8200 block of Sherman Circle North. Several Miramar police officers were already in the apartment complex when the shot rang out, searching for a missing 6-year-old who was quickly found unharmed, witnesses said. When the shot was fired, officers ran to the victim’s apartment and kicked in the door, said Abel Hernandez, 19, who lives in an adjacent building in the complex.

“The police brought out a small boy wearing a striped shirt and shorts,” Hernandez said.

Rues said the child, who was not injured, did not appear to understand what had happened. Police were trying to locate family members who could take custody of the child.

Yup. Let’s keep all our guns handy for whenever someone needs one.

Refused a kiss, 92-year-old woman shoots at neighbor

with one comment

Helen Staudinger, 92, wanted a kiss.

But authorities say after her 53-year-old neighbor refused, the central Florida woman aimed a semi-automatic pistol at his house and fired four times.

“If my head would have been over just a little bit further, (a bullet) probably would have hit me in the back of the head,” the neighbor, Dwight Bettner, told Reuters.

Staudinger remained in jail on Tuesday, a day after being arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into a dwelling…

Bettner, a former law enforcement officer and boilermaker, said his elderly neighbor has seemed attracted to him since he moved in six months ago. He’s not sure why.

“I’ve taken her trash out for her, just neighborly stuff,” Bettner said. “I guess she just took that as something else…”

Just after noon on Monday, Bettner argued with Staudinger when she came to his house and refused to leave, according to an incident report.

I want a kiss before I leave,” Bettner said Staudinger told him.

No, he said. “Just go back to your property, and leave me alone,” Bettner recalled saying.

Bettner was on the phone with his father when he heard gunshots moments later. One bullet went through a window, spraying him with glass…

Bettner said on Tuesday that he would probably move out of his rented home. “I just don’t need the stress or the hassle,” he said. “I thought this only happened to younger people.”

Cinema Rage in Latvia!

leave a comment »

A man has been shot dead at a cinema in Latvia after a fellow movie-goer objected to the volume at which he was eating his popcorn.

The assailant, 27, reportedly had a brief argument with the man, aged 43, who was sitting next to him during a screening of Black Swan in the Forum cinema, one of the largest in the city of Riga.

When the credits rolled, the younger man pulled out a legally registered firearm and shot the other man dead. Other audience members then phoned for the police and an ambulance.

The younger man – a graduate of the police academy who holds a doctorate in law from the University of Latvia – waited to be arrested.

I guess he thinks he’s got a case.

Three-year-old shoots himself and his baby sister – WTF?

with 2 comments

A nation full of 2nd Amendment children

A 3-year-old boy and his 1-year-old sister remained hospitalized Wednesday after he accidentally fired a pistol in their Macon, Ga., home, police say.

Sgt. Sean Defoe with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said Gary Davis, 30, and Lashonda Hopkins, 25, were in the bedroom Tuesday evening while their toddlers were in the living room unattended, Macon’s WMAZ-TV reported.

The boy allegedly climbed onto a shelf and grabbed a loaded .22-caliber handgun that accidentally discharged while he was examining it. The bullet nicked both the boy’s thumb and his sister’s knee, police said.

The children were taken to a hospital where they were reported in stable condition.

No charges have been filed, yet. I would suggest Criminal Stupidity. For the parents.

I have guns in my home. At least one of them is loaded. No children.

Still, none of them are easily accessible to someone casually or even inquisitively wandering around the house. Because sometimes we have guests which includes the younger set.

The safety is always on. No round in the chamber.

What’s next?

Florida police are trying to figure out how a 5-year-old boy came into possession of a loaded handgun that he dropped inside a pre-kindergarten class.

A female pre-kindergarten teacher at Moseley Elementary School in Palatka was giving a music lesson Tuesday morning when she noticed the small, .22-caliber handgun fall out of the boy’s pocket, Assistant Police Chief James Griffith said.

The firearm did not go off, and no one was hurt.

But the boy, along with the gun, were promptly brought to school administrators. They alerted school security and police at 9:25 a.m., having determined that there was no immediate danger to the school, which is in Palatka in northeastern Florida.

The boy is both initially a suspect in this thing, but also a victim,” said Griffith. “This is very rare.”

The boy told authorities that he found the firearm inside the vehicle that he had come to school in — one which Griffith said belonged to the youngster’s stepfather. Neither the boy nor stepfather have been named, the assistant chief said, in order to protect the identity of the child, who is a minor…

“There was nothing that transpired, as far as threats, showing the weapon off, anything like that,” Griffith said. “At this point, we are trying to determine where the child got the gun from, and if any adult was negligent in allowing him to gain access (to it).”

Phew! Folks are lucky he didn’t accidentally fire the gun, showing it off or something like that.

Depending on whether or not it was a well-made piece, they’re all lucky that a handgun like this – with rimfire cartridges – didn’t fire when it hit the floor.

Need a nap + sleep with gun for protection = shoot yourself

leave a comment »

A 30-year old Michigan man shot himself Monday morning while napping in his car parked on the Ohio Turnpike.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the 1:38 a.m. shooting, but troopers said it appears Mahmoud Ajaj of Dearborn, Mich., accidentally shot himself after falling asleep…

In the car with Ajaj was his wife and two children, ages 3 years old and 7 months old. After parking on the side of the highway, Ajaj took out a gun that was in his car’s glovebox, troopers said.

“He said it was for protection in case someone tried to rob them,” Blake said.

Ajaj held the gun on his chest, the barrel pointing toward the driver’s-side door. As he drifted off to sleep, he inadvertently squeezed the trigger…

The bullet entered Ajaj’s upper left thigh and exited his lower thigh. He then drove to a nearby exit as his wife called 911…

By late Monday he had already been treated and released from the hospital. Charges have not been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, troopers said.

Dude could have qualified for a Darwin Award if he got the femoral artery.

Barbie-man bandit holds up Long Island store – for a Gatorade

with one comment

Some men can wear pink – some can’t

The blonde bandit with the handbag and the handgun was no lady.

A cross-dressing crook in a pink jumpsuit held up a Long Island stationery store, only to find his efforts thwarted when the cash register wouldn’t open, Nassau County police said.

The white male, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, sported the blonde wig and the summery outfit Thursday afternoon when he entered the C&R Stationery Store in Lynbrook.

The pretty-in-pink bandit pulled a handgun from his off-white purse and ordered the female store clerk to empty the register, police said Friday.

When the panicked clerk couldn’t get to the cash quickly enough, the bandit settled for swiping a bottle of Gatorade before fleeing on his bicycle from the storefront shop on Union Ave., cops said…

Police planned to review footage from the store’s surveillance camera in their effort to track down the suspect.

And then pass it along to Jon Stewart, I imagine.

NBA players draw down on each other in locker room standoff

with 2 comments

Arenas and Crittenton

Two Washington Wizards basketball players drew guns on each other during a heated Christmas Eve gambling debt dispute. Law enforcement authorities said they were investigating an incident but gave no details.

Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton both brandished firearms in the team’s locker room, the NY Post reported, citing NBA league sources.

The dispute erupted when Arenas, a three-time NBA all-star, refused to pay up on a debt owed to Crittenton.

Multiple sources said Arenas drew his gun first, the Post reported. Neither Arenas, 27, nor Crittenton, 22, could be reached for comment Friday.

The incident, according to the Post, occurred during a Wizards practice day at the Verizon Center, the team’s arena in downtown Washington.

I’m always pleased to learn that the sort of good college education our sports stars get – includes conflict resolution.

DC copper pulls his gun on snowball fight

with 7 comments

A plainclothes police detective allegedly pulled his gun out and waved it at a large group of people in a snowball fight at the corner of 14th and U Streets NW Saturday afternoon.

An off-duty member of the Metropolitan Police Dept. was reportedly driving his car in the area when the car was suddenly pelted with a barrage of snowballs, according to a statement from the MPD.

The detective stopped his car, got out and approached a crowd of people that might have thrown the snowballs. He then got into a verbal fight with members of the crowd, according to police.

At some point, the detective called for assistance. According to witnesses, one of the uniformed officers that responded pulled out his weapon as he approached the plainclothes detective. As soon as the detective identified himself, the uniformed officer put his gun back in the holster, police said.

MPD claims the footage does not show the detective drawing his weapon, but they have since received additional images and statements that would seem to support that allegation.

According to 3D Commander George Kusik, the uniformed officer conducted himself appropriately.

Uh, OK. There wasn’t anything more demanding of his attention? Like going home, having supper, leaving people alone?
