Convict who cooked and ate her hubby tries for parole again

with one comment

A former model who killed, cooked and ate her husband 20 years ago will make a bid for freedom next week.

Omaima Aree Nelson is slated to appear before a California parole board to plead for an early release from Chowchilla State Prison, where she is serving 27 years to life, according to KTLA-TV.

Nelson killed her 56-year-old husband, William Nelson, over Thanksgiving weekend in 1991, just a month after they married. She had come to the U.S. five years earlier from Egypt, where she worked as a model and nanny…

Nelson claimed at trial she had been abused and her husband had raped her the night before she killed him in their Costa Mesa apartment, according to the Los Angeles Times. After murdering him, Nelson boiled her husband’s head on the stove and fried his hands in oil, the Daily Pilot reported.

She once admitted, but now denies, dipping his body in barbecue sauce. Neighbors at the time said the garbage disposal was on for “a long time” and “constant chopping sounds” were coming from the home, according to the Daily Pilot newspaper…

Nelson offered ex-boyfriends $75,000 to help her dispose of some of the body parts, according to police. She found no takers and was arrested Dec. 2, 1991, after police found trash bags containing human body parts in the couple’s apartment and in the victim’s Corvette.

She tried for parole five years ago – and failed. But, prison food is a drag, man.

Got to try to get some decent civilian calories.

Nanny was renting baby to beggars in Bangalore

with 2 comments

Child welfare officials are investigating the case of a baby who was reportedly rented out to beggars in the southern Indian city of Bangalore…

The nanny reportedly told the parents she would “rent” the baby for 100 rupees ($2) a day to beggars who attract more sympathy with an infant.

She was found out when the mother came home early to find her child missing…

Ms Nayak added that the parents were worried about the stigma that could be attached to the infant if a case were to be pursued by the authorities…

Police say they will track down the “horror nanny” – as she is being described in the local media – if the parents file a complaint…

But he added that it would be difficult to pursue the case without co-operation from the parents. The nanny has been dismissed from their service.

Unconfirmed reports say the child was sedated and dressed in rags. The practice is said to have gone on for several weeks.

Trust no one and cut the cards – or in this case, check the references.

Australian Nanny-state filtering trials ready to start

leave a comment »

The Australian government is due to start a series of field trials this month in order to filter websites that are harmful to children. The ‘cyber-safety plan’, spearheaded by Australia’s Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Stephen Conroy, will cost around AUS$126 million and will be implemented over a period of four years.

Opinion is sharply divided about how well the system will work, according to Radio New Zealand’s Technology commentator Simon Morton who looked into the issue for the BBC World Service’s Digital Planet programme.

Many from the internet industry and freedom of speech groups fear that if the filtering system is implemented, then other illegal content as well as material the government deems inappropriate could be added and blocked in the future.

This would see the government establishing a blacklist of websites it deems harmful and ISPs providing a clean feed of the internet,” said Mr Morton…

Countries like Britain, Sweden, Canada and New Zealand have all implemented similar filtering systems, but they are all voluntary and not government-mandated. Such systems are also limited predominantly to blocking child pornography and are run by ISPs that customers can opt into…

This is not a new concept in Australia, as the previous administration trialled a free internet filter that people could use if they wanted.

“The difference is that it was an optional filter, so Australians could choose if they wanted to use it rather than this latest plan for a mandatory filtering system,” said Mr Morton.

Nanny State advocates tend to stick to the same range of jive rationales. It still comes down to individuals losing the right to choose. The government takes on the responsibility of mommy and daddy. There’s always some crap religionist at hand to define morality and security – for everyone else.
