Argument over care for cancer patient ends in murders and suicide

Logan, Ohio — A man repeatedly shot his adult son and two sisters-in-law in his living room, killing them in front of his terminally ill wife, then fatally shot himself on the front porch as family tension about the cancer-stricken woman’s care apparently boiled over…
An earlier dispute about whether the woman should have been fed tea and toast or the orange her husband had peeled for her apparently set off the shooter Monday, 63-year-old Paul Gilkey…
The sick woman, 59-year-old Darlene Gilkey, witnessed the shootings from a hospital bed in her living room but wasn’t injured, the sheriff said. The family friction escalated into violence in the evening when Paul Gilkey went to a bedroom, retrieved a semiautomatic handgun and began threatening relatives, North said…
Gilkey, known as David or Dave because he went by his middle name, served a decade in prison beginning in 1974 for killing a man in Athens County in May of that year, according to court records. He also had a 1986 arrest for felonious assault, according to the sheriff…
Which didn’t keep him from having a gun in the house.
Darlene Gilkey was receiving hospice care through a company in nearby Lancaster, whose chief executive declined to comment Tuesday because of privacy restrictions. Investigators said she was taken to a hospital after the shootings rattled the normally quiet area.
I’m never surprised when people do something crazy and criminal. I am perpetually astounded over the candyass and cowardly politicians who are so cowed by the NRA and nutballs whose guns are grafted replacements for their sexual organs.
I’ve been a hunter and a gun owner most of my life. The easiest time for me to acquire guns was when I was a teenage gang member. In the 1960′s I would shoot at the same gun club that Lee Harvey Oswald had belonged to.
As a former handgun hunter, I still love target shooting – but, blogging and photography are much higher priorities; so, I haven’t spent any money in a gun shop since the last century. I have always been ready to process whatever reasonable state and federal requirements the law might require over this life of mine with guns. I have little respect for the nutballs who make gun ownership some kind of holy crusade, a religion for fundamentalist mice.
OK to drop body in trash? Why do you think that’s allowable?

Pierce County prosecutors have charged Anthony T. Clark with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a controlled substance…
Prosecutors allege Clark shot 16-year-old Devondre Davis in the back of the head on Wednesday…
Clark gave conflicting statements about what happened in the apartment and to Davis.
According to court documents, he initially said he didn’t know why he was arrested. He later said he’d shot Davis but it was an accident. He then told detectives that Davis had arrived at the apartment with rock cocaine and a gun. Clark said Davis was near the bedroom closet because they were looking for Clark’s mother’s jewelry to steal and sell.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the the 16-year-old boy found slain in a garbage bin on Tacoma’s East Side this week as Devondre D. Davis…
Tacoma police arrested the man Wednesday after he asked some neighbors if he could put a dead body in their trash can in an alley in the 500 block of East 36th Street. The neighbors reported the encounter to officers, who found Davis’ body.
Unlawful possession of a controlled substance? Charge him with unlawful possession of a brain!
101-year-old woman survives shootout between her grandsons
A 101-year-old woman wounded in an exchange of gunfire between her grandsons was recovering Monday and is expected to survive, her daughter said.
Police said Naomi Taggart was in stable but serious condition Monday at VCU Medical Center, where she was recovering from being shot in the neck during the weekend in her South Richmond home. She was not an intended target, authorities said.
“She’s breathing on her own,” said Taggart’s daughter, Charleine Taggart, who is the mother of both suspected shooters. “She has her eyes open, and she’s trying to talk.”
Authorities say Steven L. Taggart, 28, and his brother, Kevin D. McCray, 36, were arguing over money when they started shooting at each other Saturday about midnight at the home the two men shared with their grandmother…
Authorities arrested Steven Taggart and charged him with aggravated assault against Charleine Taggart in an incident that she said occurred Friday at the same home.
Police are looking for McCray on charges of attempted murder, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charges stem from the shootout between him and his brother…
Friends and neighbors praised Naomi Taggart on Monday, calling her a kind woman who enjoyed watching television game shows, especially “Jeopardy!” and “The Price is Right.”
“I said a lot of prayers,” Charleine Taggart said. “I didn’t want her to die like this.”
She added that she expects that McCray will be caught. “They’ll get him; they always do,” she said of her son. “Once he runs out of money, he’ll turn himself in.”
Wonderful family, eh? And keeping those guns handy certainly provided safety for everyone.
Kids get to play with rifle: 5-year-old kills 4-year-old

The Victoria County [Texas] Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting death of a 4-year-old Victoria boy late Wednesday night.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was fatally shot in the abdomen by a 5-year-old sibling who was playing with a bolt action rifle in the back room of their home, Chief Deputy Terry Simons of the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
The call came in at 10 p.m. from a home on Farm-to-Market Road 444, just south of Telferner, Simons said.
The parents were at the home at the time of the shooting, but the sheriff’s office is investigating to determine why the boy and his sibling were left unsupervised, Simons said…
The boy’s parents drove him to the Telferner Grocery and Market to meet with paramedics, who then rushed the boy to Citizens Medical Center.
The boy was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m., Simons said.
Too sad. I think I’ll leave thoughts and comments up to you.
Enjoy a quiet round of golf – until you’re robbed and shot!
Melvin Philpart

Sitting in a cart just to the side of Deerfield Country Club’s 17th tee, the two golfers were still savoring their pars on the previous hole when they were confronted by two men wearing ski masks and flashing .38-caliber revolvers.
Melvin Philpart was playing golf in Deerfield Beach, Fla., with his cousin, Lataurus Randall, when they were approached by two gunmen who may have entered through a hole in a fence. Mr. Randall was fatally shot.
The gunmen ordered the golfers to the ground and demanded their money. One of the masked men then tussled with one of the golfers, Lataurus Randall, shooting him once in the back before both robbers fled, empty-handed, into a nearby stand of Australian pines bordering a low-income neighborhood.
Mr. Randall, a 35-year-old owner of a landscaping company who had a 9-year-old son, died in the hospital the next day. His golf partner and cousin, Melvin Philpart, who was unhurt, said he wished he had done more to help. But he said he was startled to see two masked men with guns on the golf course he has played most of his life.
“When these guys showed up, I first thought it was a joke,” said Mr. Philpart, 43, who does auto detailing in nearby Boynton Beach. “I said to one of them, ‘What do you think you’re doing out here? This is a golf course…’ ”
Golfers are frequently warned in some pro shops to be vigilant. Some golfers now say they carry their wallets and keys, rather than leaving them in the golf carts…
The shooting, on Jan. 13, has baffled the police and continues to attract interest in the local news media and among golf bloggers, who warn that the shooting is a reminder that players should always be on the lookout, even on the greens.
“Clearly, no one should play golf in fear,” Bart Pfankuch, a Southwest Florida golf blogger, wrote. “But it is worth a reminder to keep an eye out, and your instincts plugged in, whenever approached by someone who does not have a clear reason to be on the course.”
Life in these United States.

Cinema Rage in Latvia!

A man has been shot dead at a cinema in Latvia after a fellow movie-goer objected to the volume at which he was eating his popcorn.
The assailant, 27, reportedly had a brief argument with the man, aged 43, who was sitting next to him during a screening of Black Swan in the Forum cinema, one of the largest in the city of Riga.
When the credits rolled, the younger man pulled out a legally registered firearm and shot the other man dead. Other audience members then phoned for the police and an ambulance.
The younger man – a graduate of the police academy who holds a doctorate in law from the University of Latvia – waited to be arrested.
I guess he thinks he’s got a case.
Nancy Reagan’s Secret Service agent accidentally shoots himself

A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan accidentally shot himself in the hip Friday at a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department shooting range in Camarillo, but he was expected to survive.
The shooting occurred about 9:50 a.m. at the shooting range on Aviation Drive in Camarillo, sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Mike Aranda said. The agent was putting his gun back in its holster when it went off, sheriff’s officials said.
He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura with a non-life-threatening injury to his hip, Aranda said. His name was not released.
The Secret Service rented a portion of the range for training Friday, officials said. The training was unrelated to the upcoming celebration at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley of the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth, authorities said.
The injured agent, however, was assigned to the Reagan Protective Division, confirmed Doug Cohen, Secret Service resident agent-in-charge in Ventura County. The division handles security for Nancy Reagan…
Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, said the agency will try to find out exactly what happened and prevent it from occurring again.
As opposed to what? Trying to see if they can duplicate the circumstances and get at least half their detachment in Ventura County to shoot themselves?
Guilty verdict for shooting over ‘fat’ tease

A jury has found a Joliet man guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a man during a 2009 melee after the victim told his pregnant girlfriend she looked fat in a photograph…
Tyrone Henderson, 31, also was found guilty of home invasion, criminal trespass to residence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and being an armed habitual criminal.
Henderson shot Michael Amos, 21, on Aug. 26, 2009 at the victim’s home in Joliet, according to the Will County state’s attorney’s office. Amos had teased Henderson’s girlfriend that evening. She called Henderson, who arrived at Amos’ house a short time later armed with a .45-caliber weapon.
Henderson punched the victim’s brother in the face, which led to a melee inside the house. Henderson then brandished his weapon and shot Amos three times -– once in the shoulder, once in the stomach and once in the leg -– while others in the house tried to take the gun from his hand, officials said.

Giffords was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.
She first won election to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in 2006. In November, she edged a tea party favorite.
There never is a shortage of violent, ignorant thugs in this land who fervently believe they can enforce their political will upon the land by force of arms, assault and murder.
UPDATE: Jared Laughner is the name of the shooter, an Arizona resident.
Need a nap + sleep with gun for protection = shoot yourself

A 30-year old Michigan man shot himself Monday morning while napping in his car parked on the Ohio Turnpike.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the 1:38 a.m. shooting, but troopers said it appears Mahmoud Ajaj of Dearborn, Mich., accidentally shot himself after falling asleep…
In the car with Ajaj was his wife and two children, ages 3 years old and 7 months old. After parking on the side of the highway, Ajaj took out a gun that was in his car’s glovebox, troopers said.
“He said it was for protection in case someone tried to rob them,” Blake said.
Ajaj held the gun on his chest, the barrel pointing toward the driver’s-side door. As he drifted off to sleep, he inadvertently squeezed the trigger…
The bullet entered Ajaj’s upper left thigh and exited his lower thigh. He then drove to a nearby exit as his wife called 911…
By late Monday he had already been treated and released from the hospital. Charges have not been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, troopers said.
