Mexican Cardinal says Gays and transsexuals can’t enter heaven

A Roman Catholic Cardinal told homosexuals and transsexuals today they would never get into heaven, prompting a rebuke from the Vatican itself.

“Transsexuals and homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven, it’s not me who says it but St. Paul,” said Mexican Cardinal Javier Barragan…referring to one of St. Paul’s epistles…

“One is not born homosexual but they become that way. This is for various reasons: education, for not having developed their identity during their adolescence, maybe they are not guilty but by going against the dignity of the body they certainly will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

“Everything that goes against nature and against the dignity of the body offends God,” he added.

Aurelio Mancuso, president of Italy’s main gay rights group, Arcigay, said Barragan’s remarks were part of the Church’s “ridiculous theories about sexuality and the dignity of the person…”

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the website should not be considered an authority on Catholic thinking “on complex and delicate issues such as homosexuality…”

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are sinful but homosexuality in itself is not.

Like, uh, it’s OK to breathe – you just shouldn’t breathe air. The Catholic Church may be infallible. Doesn’t mean they have to make logical sense.

Baltimore mayor guilty of stealing from the poor

A jury has convicted Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon of embezzlement for improperly using gift cards intended for the needy, the poor.

She was found guilty of a single misdemeanor count of fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary. She could be removed from office because it is a theft-related crime.

Dixon solicited several cards for her own use from two developers, including Patrick Turner, who testified this month that Dixon asked him to donate gift cards from retailers and have them delivered to her office. He said he spent $1,000 total — $500 for a Best Buy gift card and $500 for a Target one, according to the Baltimore Sun newspaper.

No date was set for sentencing. Cabezas said Dixon, Baltimore’s first black female mayor, faces up to five years in prison. She was indicted in January.

She is guilty of behaving like an old-fashioned American politico. Because she and her machine won an election or two, she presumed approval of anything she chose to appropriate for herself. Like most hacks – she was taking care of herself instead of taking care of the people she represents.

More than anything else, changing this part of American politics is what Obama voters wanted. Obviously Congress, the Republican Party, the Democrat Party – haven’t yet gotten the message.

Stem cell lines approved that satisfy Congress’ ethics – WTF?

The U.S. government approved the first 13 batches of human embryonic stem cells – opening their use for federally funded research under reduced restrictions announced by President Barack Obama in March.

The batches, known as lines, were made by two researchers at Harvard University and Rockefeller University using private funds, said Dr. Francis Collins, director of the national Institutes of Health.

The decision frees them and many other researchers to use federal money to work with them…

In March, Obama lifted restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research that had been imposed by his predecessor, George W. Bush.

He could not lift a restriction set by Congress, called the Dickey-Wicker amendment, which forbids the use of federal money to make the stem cells, which require destruction of a human embryo, but freed up the possibility for researchers to use federal funds to work with cells that others have made.

More bullshit regulations established by one of the most corrupt bodies in American politics. These creeps kneel before puppet-masters of superstition to gain votes for their sleazy careers – and they legislate scientific ethics?

Science had nothing to do with the legislation. There was no concern for health or humanity – only votes provided by religious hucksters and their obedient followers.

Even though Obama was free to remove executive orders leftover from his punk predecessor, less time was wasted – in this case – by working around opportunist Congressional roadblocks.

Geek tech finds evidence for conviction

Massachusetts authorities say thermal imaging technology has for the first time helped a jury convict someone of a crime in the state.

Prosecutors say Jose Rodriguez of Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood was convicted on Monday of illegal possession of a loaded gun and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail.

Authorities say the 25-year-old Rodriguez was seen throwing something into the snow last January as police chased him for questioning. He was apprehended, and police retracing his steps used a thermal imaging camera to find a gun in the snow.

The 9 mm handgun showed up lighter than its surroundings because it retained the body heat of the person who had been carrying it.

Rodriguez and his lawyer had no comment. Har!

Google to cooperate with newspaper access limits

Newspaper publishers will now be able to set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google.

The concession follows claims from some media companies that the search engine is profiting from online news pages.

Under the First Click Free programme, publishers can now prevent unrestricted access to subscription websites. Users who click on more than five articles in a day may be routed to payment or registration pages…

Google users may start seeing registration pages appear when they click for a sixth time on any given day at websites of publishers using the programme.

This will only affect websites that currently charge for content.

RTFA. Lots of woolgathering and foggy crystal ball-gazing. I think all the media sites have missed the point that Google just established:

They have further covered their buns against allegations of Restraint of Trade made by fogies like Rupert Murdoch. But, they allow the decision to cut off readers’ access to lie entirely within the decision-making apparatus put online by media publishers. It ain’t Google’s fault if you click a link to Financial Times and are greeted with a request to register and pay to read the whole article.

You can still press the Back Button and return to your original search page – and click on to another media site offering their own take on the same content, no charge!

Keep the “X” in Xmas!

“No god? … No problem!” reads the advertisement featuring the smiling faces of people wearing Santa Claus hats. “Be good for goodness’ sake.”

Over the next two weeks, 270 of the ads will go up on city buses and trains in the Washington area as part of the holiday kickoff to campaigns sponsored by secular groups in cities around the country and abroad. If last year was any indication, the signs are likely to spark a theological war of words.

“We don’t intend to rain on anyone’s parade, but secular people celebrate the holidays, too, and we’re just trying to reach out to our people,” said Roy Speckhardt, the executive director of the American Humanist Association. “To the degree that we are reaching out to the godly, it’s just to say that you can be good without god…”

Elsewhere, this year’s secular signs vary in tone.

In Seattle, this year’s signs say “Millions are good without God.” In Las Vegas, signs to be put up this week will say “Reasons Greetings” and “Yes, Virginia … there is no God…”

The campaigns come against a backdrop of a growing number of nonbelievers. Fifteen percent of Americans identified themselves as having “no religion” in a 2008, up from 8 percent in 1990, according to a study by the Program on Public Values at Trinity College in Hartford.

Overdue. But, don’t get your shorts in a bunch over discovering Americans are more ignorant than the rest of the industrial West. That’s true in almost every aspect of life – whether it be politics, social structure, interpersonal relationships, knowledge of science.

You name it – we can figger out how to lag behind.

Particle beam record set – no black holes, yet!

The “Big Bang” experiment at CERN near Geneva scored a world record…by accelerating beams to the highest energy ever achieved in a particle collider, the research center announced.

Scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said the achievement marked a major milestone on the way to tests next year which they hope will unlock secrets of the origins and make-up of the universe.

The energy of the twin beams circulated around 27-km tunnels deep underground went, at 1.18 trillion electric volts (TeV), well past the previous highest — just under 1 TeV — in a collider at the U.S. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

The achievement in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) came 10 days after the world’s largest scientific experiment was restarted following an accident soon after its launch in September 2008.

We are still coming to terms with just how smooth the LHC commissioning is going,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer as the record was announced. “It is fantastic.”

The beam energy now achieved in the LHC — a vast complex of huge magnets, electronics and computers costing some $10 billion underground on the Franco-Swiss border — leaves some way to go before the real “Big Bang” experiments can begin.

The timorous fans of junk science still have months and weeks of knee-quaking remaining.

Escaped killer picked off getaway bike

Germany’s most wanted fugitive was captured Tuesday after a five-day manhunt, when police knocked the escaped murderer off the woman’s bicycle he was riding along a rural road near the Dutch border.

Peter Paul Michalski surrendered without a fight after an unmarked police car deliberately crashed into him, knocking him off the bicycle onto the grassy shoulder of the road.

The 46-year-old, who was serving a life sentence when he escaped from prison last week, was carrying a pistol. An accomplice in the escape was captured Sunday.

They made a copy of a key inside the jail and simply unlocked several doors to escape, according to German media reports. They even stopped to wave good-bye to a security camera outside the front gate before getting into a taxi.

Cars trump bicycles every time.
