Blood money ruled adequate penalty for Saudi who raped and killed his 5-year-old daughter

A Saudi man who raped his five-year-old daughter and tortured her to death has been sentenced to pay “blood money” to the mother after having served a short jail term…

The man, said to be a religious scholar who is also a regular guest on Islamic television networks, confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, activists from the group Women to Drive said in a statement on Saturday.

Lamia was admitted to hospital on December 25, 2011, with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, extensive bruising and burns, the activists said.

They said the father had doubted his daughter Lamia’s virginity and had her checked up by a medic.

She died last October.

Randa al-Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lamia was admitted, said the girl’s back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere”, according to the group.

…The judge has ruled the prosecution could only seek “blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lamia’s death suffices as punishment”…

The ruling is based on national laws that a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives, activists said.

In case you never had a clear understanding of how backwards and brutal a theocracy can be – here’s an example you should never forget.

While I agree with the sentiment that you shared, as an anthropology/sociology major in college, I have to let you know that I have not come across a single “tribe” that has this sort of moral vacancy. This is a travesty of justice and shows a cultural lack of regard for women and girl children held by the Saudi Arabian government. This is not a tribal thing. Most tribes regard life as precious, even a girl child. We are half the sky.

I can’t even comprehend the horror of this.
There is actually a law protecting men from murdering his wife and/or children ?

The little girl was 5 ! How do you question a 5 year old’s virginity unless of course you’re raping her. Which , as it seems , he was.

He should’ve gotten life. He took a life away , why does he get to continue to live his ?

Her death doesn’t serve as a punishment , because he didn’t/doesn’t even care ! How is that a punishment within itself ?

In a way this is bittersweet. Bitter because of how she tragically died, sweet because she is no longer under the rules of her culture and religion.

She is free , to be who she pleases. Also , since I believe in reincarnation , and her short life was horrendous because of her hideous father, she will be reborn into something great and get to expierence the life that was taken away from her.

what is the name and location of this animal?
If he regularly appears on TV as a religious expert, he has a name and it is known. His identity should be published in the west, and his name should be linked to this crime in his home country, no matter how backwards and barbarous this theocracy is.

I wish someone would put out a fatwa on his head. He is a pig. A disgrace to humanity and God/ Allah and should be shunned by his people at the very least, but if there was justice in a nation that believes it is okay to stone people – he should have been served an even more brutal death for the most heinous of crimes. A nation that does not protect children and women from brutality is a nation of cowards and perverts.

Brilliant article, but there is a typo at the end.

In case you never had a clear understanding of how backwards and brutal men can be – here’s an example you should never forget.

There – I corrected it for you.

Never heard of Golda Meier? Think Palestinian prisoners had it made when she ruled Israel? Apparently you are convinced only Islam produces theocracies?

I’m not wasting time fiddling with ideologues convinced of purity as defined by sex as religion. You now may wander back to your wee corner.

Add another – Pratibha Patil didn’t change life for Dalits or for women in general in India while she was president. Not an Islamic nation; but, officially Hindu.

Really, keano? Can you be specific about that? I, ( being of course a man-hating, ball-breaking feminazi) would really like to rape and torture my five year old son, but I am too scared of going to prison. Can I convert or what…?
