The nutballs who believe guns are essential are as incompetent in their glorified interpretation of the 2nd Amendment as their abuse of the value of the rest of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I wrote both of my Senators, after that joke of a vote, to express my disappointment that they both chose to oppose the legislation. They both sent me newsletters, because they wanted to share their excitement that the bill failed. I weep!

What part of “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” do you not understand? The Founders wrote that as a protection against tyranny. If anything we are in more danger of that today than when the amendment was written. The “militia” part of the amendment means that the people should be trained and competent, a duty which the states have often neglected.

In reply to “moss,” yes guns are essential to true liberty. That is why tyrannies and genocide are always linked with banning that right.

Thank you for defining “non sequitur”, once again.

As Eid said, read history. Try reading law. Though I doubt you will. Most of the folks posting articles for knowledge and discussion here are gun owners. Not gun nuts.

Thanks for illustrating the difference between nuts and responsible citizens, fear and frenzy vs law and order. Even the fascist-minded nutballs of the 60‘s respected pleas from police to differentiate between arming the crazies and crooks like assault troops in the name of self-defense.

Government has a right and responsibility to regulate dangerous behavior, destructive instruments – whether purchasing guns or licensing and insuring drivers. Only fools need semi-automatic weapons as part of the political process. Only those ignorant of history think we need Brown Shirts marching through our neighborhoods to protect us from government. I’d rather have schoolteachers armed with computers, thank you, instead of the armband crowd.

Every nation striving for ethnic cleansing and genocide – from Germany to Israel and Serbia – has utilized an armed citizen militia as part of their racist and fascist politics.

Ignorance of history, over and over again. The 2nd Amendment was proposed by the era’s equivalent of today’s cheap-ass Republicans as a no-tax answer to having (and funding) a standing army. The timorous cheapskates of the day came down on the side of citizens arming themselves at their own expense to defend the nation against invasions by foreign powers – yes, the Brits.

After the War of 1812 and other attempts at counter-revolution it became clear we really needed that standing army. Yes, that included taxes – another nutball anathema. Over time, the original discussion disappeared from conservative mythology till we got to political policy as religion.

Cripes. Do you spend your whole life walking around regurgitating slogans – brainwashed by political hacks and this week’s ideology – your understanding of life formed by the same processes that say, “Coke’s the one” or better, “Not a cough in a carload”?

Chugging down a beer at the American Legion bar on a Friday night may be accepting to meaningless slogans – you get cheers for saying such crap. That should have nothing to do with how you reach a principled, thoughtful and, yes, useful political decision that advances the needs of a whole society. This ain’t a high school club election.

The “militia” part of the amendment means the National Guard. Abused by cruds like Bush and Cheney to fight and die for the Oil Patch Boys on the other side of the world.

You weren’t paying attention in 2003 either were you!
