Descanso honors BREAKING BAD’s Walter White

“Breaking Bad” fans continue to honor Walter White.

North Valley resident Michelle Valdez-Browning and her brother, Marc Valdez, and son Aaron Browning made a descanso near the Nazi compound where White passed away in the show. (A descanso is a roadside memorial that commemorates a site where a person died. They are seen along roads in New Mexico.)

Valdez-Browning says her brother was part of the locations crew who helped scout the various areas…“He put his heart and soul into finding the right places,” she says.

Once the show aired, the trio decided to pay tribute to White and put the descanso in front of the area…The location is near Second and Los Ranchos Road NW.

In case you want to be among the hundreds who continue to visit Albuquerque to pay their respects.

Fox News’ new giant screens are lower resolution than an iPad

News anchor Shepard Smith proudly demonstrated a remodeled “Fox News Deck” featuring massive, expensive new 55 inch touchscreens sold by Microsoft. However, the giant new screens have much lower resolution than even a 9.7″ iPad.

Smith beamed in showing off how Fox had, at considerable expense, revamped its news anchor sound stage to include actors manipulating at least ten of the massive new displays, each of which sells for around $7,100.

The displays are sold by Microsoft, which last year acquired Perceptive Pixel, the manufacturer of the giant touchscreens. The screen is essentially a very high quality HDTV equipped with a “projected capacitative” multitouch sensor. The screens are powered by Windows 8 and can also be navigated using an “Active Stylus,” which works like a wireless remote control.

Fox News said the month-long remodeling of its “revolutionary new studio” was performed in response to viewership changes, particularly the shifts occurring among users armed with mobile phones and iPads, many of which have ubiquitous data service…

Smith added, “we had to completely overhaul the way our news gathering works.” However, the “brand new tools to track developing stories,” that Smith said Fox was installing on stage for viewers to observe actually convey far less information that a typical pair of 17 inch computer screens.

8 Congressional Democrats busted at Washington sit-in

Eight congressional Democrats were arrested Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol while demonstrating for immigration law reform.

Those arrested included Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, a leading figure in the civil rights movement in the 1960s, Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York and Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois — along with Joe Crowley of New York, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Al Green of Texas.

They were part of a larger group conducting a sit-in to block a street in the front of the Capitol…

The arrests came as thousands of protesters took part in the “Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform” rally on the National Mall, even though the open-area national park is closed due to the federal government shutdown…

The bill closely matches a comprehensive bipartisan bill the Senate passed in June that includes a path to citizenship for most of the estimated 11.7 million immigrants living in the United States illegally. The House bill had no Republican sponsors…

The National Park Service, which administers the mall, agreed to let the event take place under First Amendment privileges…The First Amendment says Congress can make no law abridging free speech, peaceful assembly or an appeal to government to redress grievances.

The mall is intended to be the pre-eminent national civic space for public gatherings because it is considered the place where constitutional rights of speech and peaceful assembly find their fullest expression, a mall foundation statement says.

Bravo! Nice to see a small portion of our elected representatives willing to engage non-violent protest against injustice. Lots more photos over here.

Any Freedom Fighters from the NRA or the Tea Party take part? Oh.

Congress-critters not even loved by their moms, anymore!

Americans are holding Republicans primarily responsible for the partial government shutdown as public esteem sinks for all players in the impasse, President Barack Obama among them, according to a new poll. It’s a struggle with no heroes.

The Associated Press-GfK survey, out Wednesday, affirms expectations by many in Washington — Republicans among them — that the GOP may end up taking the biggest hit in public opinion from the fiscal paralysis, just as that party did when much of the government closed 17 years ago. But…there’s plenty of disdain to go around.

Overall, 62 percent mainly blamed Republicans for the shutdown. About half said Obama or the Democrats in Congress bear much responsibility…

The poll found that the tea party is more than a gang of malcontents in the political landscape, as its supporters in Congress have been portrayed by Democrats. Rather, it’s a sizable — and divisive — force among Republicans. More than 4 in 10 Republicans identified with the tea party and were more apt than other Republicans to insist that their leaders hold firm in the standoff over reopening government and avoiding a default of the nation’s debt in coming weeks.

OK – the bomb turned out to be 2 jars of spaghetti sauce

Hey – it could’ve been more dangerous

A woman who was caught red-handed with two jars of spaghetti sauce [har!] after robbing a bank has pleaded guilty to bank robbery and explosives charges.

According to police on April 6, Ophelia A. Neal told a clerk at the Fifth Third Bank in Clinton Township that she had a bomb in a cloth bag and demanded money.

Neal, 53, a parole absconder who has previous convictions for fraud, marijuana possession and assault, made her escape with an undisclosed amount of cash in a car driven by a man.

She was later arrested by police who scanned the cloth bag and discovered it contained two cans of spaghetti sauce.

Although the bank robbery occurred in Macomb County, Neal pleaded guilty in Oakland County Circuit Court where she was originally wanted for violating her parole.

I can think of some supermarket brands of spaghetti sauce might be as dangerous to your health over time – as a bomb. 🙂
