Sunoco oil pipeline ruptures and spills into Ohio nature preserve

A major oil pipeline owned by Sunoco Logistics Partners LP leaked thousands of gallons of crude oil into a nature preserve in southwest Ohio late on Monday.

Between 7,000 and 10,000 gallons of sweet crude leaked into the Oak Glen Nature Preserve about a quarter of a mile from the Great Miami River, according to early estimates from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The leak, which occurred on a line operated by Mid-Valley Pipeline Co, a division of Sunoco, was discovered at 8:20 p.m. EDT on Monday. The company shut the line, which helped reduce the pressure of the leaking oil, an EPA spokeswoman said, but it was unclear if oil was still spewing from the pipe.

Some oil reached a wetland a mile away and on Tuesday, clean-up crews were preparing to vacuum the wetland, located 20 miles north of Cincinnati.

The oil did not appear to have reached the Great Miami River [yet], though tests were still being completed, the EPA said…

The pipeline will be repaired and returned to traffic asap. We know what Sunoco’s priorities are.

We still live in a nation where politicians, pundits and profiteers think we never have enough oil. I don’t think we have enough alternatives; but, even the few we have get no attention or opportunity.

We are like rats, running from the poisons being flushed into our very heart, our rivers, and yet every single day we get up again, and drive far too long to get to our jobs. We’ve had freakin alternatives right in front of our faces for decades and still we are cavemen! We have no business with nuclear, and yet it continues. Our masters will continue to mine, blast, and pump the Earth dry at our very own hands, as long as we allow it. And we wonder why the sink-holes and potential earthquakes… wow… That stuff was supposed to stay down deep where it was, like the mineral blood of our mother! Then we burn it and blow it back into the atmosphere, we do that… We can throw around a lot of excellent words, but the greatest statement of all would be the day we just quit playing this very stupid and dangerous game. And then clean. it. up.

Rue the day we ever see a headline… “Suburban neighborhood “purified” by drone attack…” oh, wait… we already do that in Pakistan… humanity has become like a cancer, a bad dream, and the only salvation I see is… well… get back to you on that one…
