Milestone: July was the warmest month ever recorded — think any politicians on the payroll of Big Oil noticed?

July 2016 was the warmest month ever recorded, the latest in a slew of new temperature records set in the past several years, according to two new reports.

Scientists have recorded month after month of record-breaking temperatures this year, but July shattered all those records to become the hottest of any month in any year since record keeping began. The data was confirmed separately by NASA and the Japanese Meteorological Agency and provides near certainty that 2016 will be the hottest year in recorded history.

July was 0.78°C (1.4°F) warmer than the 20th century average, according to the JMA. Locations across the globe experienced extreme heat in July, including a so-called heat dome that hit across the U.S. and record temperatures of 54°C (129.2°F) in Kuwait…

Climate scientists attribute the spike in temperatures to man-made global warming along with a number of shorter-term climate patterns. In particular, El Niño — a phenomenon characterized by unusually high temperatures along the equatorial Pacific — drove up temperatures late last year and early this year…

Mail me a penny postcard if you heard anything from the Republican Party about this. Please include Blue Dog Democrats from coal, oil or natural gas-producing states.

TIME tried to include a cop-out at the end of the article, e.g., hopes that La Niña might make a difference. I’m on NOAA’s mailing list for weather events. La Niña is barely 50/50 at the moment to happen and the best description is for extra-normal. Whatever that might mean in your neck of the prairie.

No, the embargo on science, evidence-based reality, by conservative politicians has reached the same high as Earth’s greenhouse temperatures. The latter is a product of natural processes even when reacting to man-made causes. The former is a declaration of war on truth by lying politicians. That especially includes opportunists like Trump and his trumpkins – the usual scum who show up seeking fame and fortune from populist ignorance and stupidity.

The next Flint, Michigan is in Indiana — and the cover-up is 40 years old!

Akeeshea Daniels first suspected something was off when her two toddlers came down with scarlet fever. It was 2004, and she just moved her family into a spacious public housing complex in East Chicago, Indiana.

“I looked it up. Scarlet fever hasn’t been a problem since the ‘50s,” she said. “It was something straight out of a history book.”

But when she brought her concerns to the East Chicago Housing Authority — the manager of her public housing complex— she was brushed off…

The next decade was rife with mysterious family health issues: Ear infections, upper respiratory problems, throat infections. Her son was put on ADHD medication when he was seven. At any time, Daniels or one of her three children were sick with something they couldn’t kick. Just last month, Daniels took her now-18-year-old son to the emergency room for severe stomach cramps, and left with no better understanding of what was wrong.

It wasn’t until the last week of July that Daniels got her answer, in the form of two letters.

The first, sent by the Environmental Protection Agency, told her that the soil surrounding her home had been contaminated with toxic levels of arsenic and lead since at least 2014. The second, penned by East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland, informed Daniels that she and hundreds of fellow residents in the West Calumet Complex where she lives would be “temporarily relocated” due to the public health risk. The following day, the city posted a notice that the entire WCC complex was going to be demolished after tenants leave.

Since 1920 this neighborhood has been home to one or more lead-based industries. Polluting the air, killing those who worked in plants fouled with the poisonous element, torn down and leaving behind a soil bank paying interest in lead contamination often more than 200 times the allowable level.

Politicians, generations of politicians knew about the contamination. There was always a reason to do nothing. There never was a reason to inform the people – mostly poor and Black – living on top of a minefield of infection and illness.

Local government did nothing. The state did nothing. The feds performed minimal tasks when pushed and nothing more for decades. And now it’s time for the chickens to come home to roost and – at a minimum – pick up the tab for ailments afflicting these families until they die.

Assign responsibility. Make those responsible pay for their crimes!

Hey, kids! Here’s the trick to drawing Donald Trump

The hair may be apparent, but it’s the mouth that scored.

Cartoonists have had many months to hone their caricatures of Donald Trump as politician. And the pictorial evolution — like some time-lapse Dawn of Man animation — has been fascinating.

Trump, of course, has long been easy to caricature broadly. Beneath the strutting rooster’s comb-over coif — which ranges from Earl Grey silver to root-vegetable orange depending on the day — there was always the outsized personality that lent itself to ready rendering.

Yet a funny thing happened on the way to the political forum: In numerous cartoons, Trump’s mouth has eclipsed his hair as the true defining feature, and the distinguishing characteristic that makes a Trump caricature one’s own.
