Texas Hucksters Hired for Trumpkin-Style Ad Campaign for Rightwing German Party

Trump loves parades – with or without torches

❝ Angela Merkel as a terrorist — that’s the motif that the Alternative for Germany party has chosen to launch the internet portion of its campaign leading up to national parliamentary elections on Sept. 24. The right-wing populists plan to spend a large part of their 3-million-euro budget on similar publicity offenses. The party is planning a digital campaign that may well be more drastic and aggressive than anything German voters have ever seen…

❝ To assist in its efforts, the party has…engaged the services of advertising professionals in the United States with experience on the right-wing spectrum. The party is working together with the Texas-based agency Harris Media, which recently presented its plans to the AfD’s national committee. With its provocative and aggressive campaigns, the agency has already contributed to the success of a number of controversial politicians. In Britain, it worked with the anti-EU UKIP party; in Israel, it worked with the governing Likud party; and in the United States, news agency Bloomberg has dubbed company founder Vincent Harris “the man who invented the Republican internet.”…

❝ Harris, a Christian conservative, married and still under 30, recently made a personal visit to AfD headquarters in Berlin to monitor progress on the German project, party officials report. Harris founded his agency in 2008 in his college dorm room. A short time later, he led the online arm of the campaign for Ted Cruz, at the time a relatively unknown Republican from Texas who hoped to ride Tea Party backing to a seat in the Senate.

With Harris’ help, Cruz saw the number of his internet supporters skyrocket, he established contact with influential bloggers and ultimately won the election. The Republicans have become regular customers of Harris’ ever since…

❝ To place advertisements on Google or Facebook, AfD now no longer has to go through the German subsidiaries of the internet giants. Here in Germany, the party has recently been facing a lot of resistance from those offices when it tries to buy ads. Now the team at Harris Media just places quick calls to the companies’ headquarters in Silicon Valley, sources say, where the agency is very well networked as a result of its many successful political campaigns for the Republicans. AfD’s orders are then simply put through to Germany from the United States.

Make America Great at everything the Germans used to do so well, eh? Germany for Germans is a slogan the AfD has felt reminded too many of Hitler’s rise to power. Harris appears to be working as hard as possible to change that “carefulness”. After all, Trump doesn’t worry about such comparisons.

“The interesting thing about the New Albion [publicity company] was that it was so completely modern in spirit. There was hardly a soul in the firm who was not perfectly well aware that publicity – advertising – is the dirtiest ramp that capitalism has yet produced. In the red lead firm there had still lingered certain notions of commercial honour and usefulness. But such things would have been laughed at in the New Albion. Most of the employees were the hard-boiled, Americanized, go-getting type to whom nothing in the world is sacred, except money. They had their cynical code worked out. The public are swine; advertising is the rattling of a stick inside a swill-bucket. And yet beneath their cynicism there was the final naivete, the blind worship of the money-god.” George Orwell, “Keep the Aspidistra Flying” (1936) https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/o/orwell/george/o79k/chapter3.html

The result was likened to a “political earthquake” and “landslide” by experts.
The Christian Social Union (CSU), Merkel’s Bavarian sister party, saw its worst election result since 1950 on Sunday and lost its long-held majority, while the Green party and far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party saw their vote share increase.
…The AfD won 10.3 percent of the vote putting it in fourth place but marking a stark rise for the anti-immigration, euroskeptic party that didn’t even participate in the last Bavarian state election.”

Is it a testament to the strength of German democracy, or a threat to it?” (DER SPIEGEL 9/27/18) http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/how-the-alternative-for-germany-has-transformed-the-country-a-1227360.html
“In January, Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt published a book titled, “How Democracies Die”. In it, they write that in the decades since the end of the Cold War, liberal systems haven’t been overthrown through force and military coups alone. More than anything else, democracy has been undermined non-violently through the election of anti-democratic politicians. [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Democracies_Die ]
The book was written in light of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S., but Germany, too, seems to be on the verge of a turning point. By the end of this year, the AfD is likely to hold seats in every state legislature in Germany. And it has already put forward one of its own — a conspiracy theorist who predicts the imminent collapse of the euro — to chair the budget committee in the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, which oversees annual government spending of 350 billion euros ($411 billion).”

As well as politicians, the group wanted to attack journalists, who they referred to as “the media dictatorship and its slaves,” the newspaper added.
The arrests once again cast an uncomfortable spotlight on extremism in Saxony state, where Chemnitz is located and which is a stronghold of the far-right party AfD [Alternative for Germany]

A far-right party scored its strongest-ever results in two key state elections in eastern Germany on Sunday, finishing second behind the country’s major parties on the same day that Europe marked the 80th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Poland.
The anti-immigrant Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party finished second in Saxony to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU), and second in Brandenburg to the center-left Social Democrats (SPD).
The results represent a blow to Merkel’s ruling coalition with the SPD, and will be viewed as a victory for the AfD, which took 27.5% of votes in Saxony and 23.5% in Brandenburg — a significant increase on state elections five years ago, with the party almost tripling its share in Saxony and doubling it in Brandenburg.

The German city of Dresden has declared a “Nazi emergency” after years of “right-wing extremist, racist” activity in the city, a local councilor says.
Dresden city councilors this week passed a resolution warning that the far-right was growing in strength in the eastern German city.
“The word ‘Nazinotstand’ is an exaggerated formulation for the fact that there is a serious problem — similar to the climate emergency — with right-wing extremism right up to the middle of society,” Max Aschenbach, councilor for the satirist Die Partei (The Party), told CNN.
Aschenbach, who tabled the motion, told CNN the move was symbolic and would have no legal consequences, but that it served to highlight the threat posed by the far right in Dresden.
Dresden is where the the PEGIDA movement (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West) first emerged in 2013, and regular rallies are still held in the city.
Anti-immigrant sentiment runs high in the state of Saxony, of which Dresden is the capital: The Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) won 27.5% of the vote in this year’s state election.
The AfD became the first far-right party to enter Germany’s national parliament in almost 60 years when it came in third place overall in federal elections in 2017.
Aschenbach said his resolution, which was put forward to show commitment to a “democratic, open, pluralistic society,” was put to a vote by Dresden’s city council on Wednesday, and passed by 39 votes to 29. https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/02/europe/nazi-emergency-dresden-grm-intl/index.html
The city council’s decision is officially entitled “Nazinotstand? – Declaration of Principles to Counteract Anti-Democratic, Anti-Pluralist, Anti-Humanistic and Right-Wing Extremist Developments in the Dresden City Society – Strengthening Civil Society”. According to the proposal for a resolution, he should be valid for the entire term of office from 2019 to 2024. https://www.br.de/nachrichten/deutschland-welt/nazinotstand-dresden-fasst-beschluss-gegen-rechtsextremismus,RgaXyqG

BERLIN (AP) — German officials say they expect more people to be detained in connection with an alleged far-right plan to topple the government that saw 25 people rounded up Wednesday, including a self-styled prince, a retired paratrooper and a judge.
The plot was allegedly hatched by people linked to the so-called Reich Citizens movement, which rejects Germany’s postwar constitution and the legitimacy of the government.
Georg Meier, the top security official in Thuringia state, told public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk on Thursday that he expects a second wave of people being detained as authorities review evidence.
Meier accused the far-right Alternative for Germany party of fueling conspiracy theories like those that allegedly motivated the plotters detained across the country this week.
Those held include a former Alternative for Germany lawmaker, Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, who is also a Berlin judge. The party condemned the alleged coup plans.
The head of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police, Holger Muench, said officers searched about 150 locations across the country. At about 50 locations they found weapons, he told public broadcaster ZDF late Wednesday, without elaborating.
To implement their plans the group’s members were prepared to use the use of military means and violence against state representatives as well as violence. According to the investigators, the members of the group “followed a conglomerate of conspiracy myths consisting of narratives of the so-called ‘Reichsbürger’ as well as QAnon ideology.” The prosecutors added that the group’s adherents believe Germany is ruled by a so-called “deep state,” similar to baseless claims about the United States that were made by former President Donald Trump.
Germany is highly sensitive to far-right extremism because of its Nazi past and repeated acts of violence carried out by neo-Nazis in recent years, including the killing of a regional politician and the deadly attack on a synagogue in 2019.
Two years ago, far-right extremists taking part in a protest against the country’s pandemic restrictions tried and failed to storm the Bundestag building in Berlin. https://apnews.com/article/germany-government-26412c360540a994a289850a1a5f9048
