The House Oversight and Reform Committee asked Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Monday to turn over documents related to communication with her family’s shipping company as the panel stepped up an investigation into whether any actions taken by Ms. Chao amount to a conflict of interest.
Chao is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican ally of President Donald Trump. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/16/us/politics/elaine-chao-house-investigation.html
A Transportation Department representative said that the agency looked forward to responding to the committee’s request.
“Media attacks targeting the secretary’s family are stale and only attempt to undermine her long career of public service,” said the representative, who declined to be identified.
Among other things the New York-based shipping company owned by the Transportation Secretary’s family has received hundreds of millions of dollars in loan commitments from a bank run by the Chinese government to help build ships the company has purchased from government-owned shipyards there.

“New Democratic Governor of Kentucky’s Promised Executive Order Is Bad News for Mitch McConnell” https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/new-democratic-governor-of-kentuckys-promised-executive-order-is-bad-news-for-mitch-mcconnell/ Kentucky and Iowa are the only two states with lifetime bans precluding persons convicted of felonies from voting while only Maine and Vermont have no voting restrictions for ex-convicts.
Under Governor Beshear’s proposed executive order, the racial makeup of Kentucky’s electorate would see drastic changes, as state law currently bars approximately 26-percent of all black adults, compared to just eight-percent of the rest of the population, according to a report from The Appeal. https://theappeal.org/tuesdays-election-boosts-voting-rights-for-people-with-past-convictions/
According to a Morning Consult quarterly poll of senators’ approval ratings released in July, McConnell had the highest disapproval rating of any senator in their own state (50-percent) and the fifth-lowest approval rating (37-percent).

McConnell is already under scrutiny and criticism for partnering with a previously sanctioned Russian businessman, Oleg Deripaska, who McConnell voted to de-sanction. Deripaska, who owns Rusal, a Russian-owned coal company, joined McConnell in a project that his home state of Kentucky voted in 2017 to invest $15M of taxpayer money. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-a-mcconnell-backed-effort-to-lift-russian-sanctions-boosted-a-kentucky-project/2019/08/13/72b26e00-b97c-11e9-b3b4-2bb69e8c4e39_story.html
