(New York Times July 13, 2018): “The nation’s top intelligence officer [Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence] said on Friday that the persistent danger of Russian cyberattacks today was akin to the warnings the United States had of stepped-up terror threats ahead of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. “The warning lights are blinking red again,” Mr. Coats said as he cautioned of cyberthreats. “Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack.”
Also, according to Seth G. Jones, a senior adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, “Russia continues to be aggressive across the board. Much as the Soviets did in the Cold War, the Russian active measures are much bigger than just elections.”
Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado yesterday FBI Director Chris Wray warned the bureau believes that Russia interfered with the last U.S. presidential election and that the Kremlin is “very active” in its attempts to foster political divisiveness in America. “The intelligence community’s assessment has not changed,” Wray said. “My view has not changed, which is that Russia attempted to interfere with the last election and it continues to engage in malign influence operations to this day.” (CNN 7/19/18) https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/18/politics/wray-russia-meddling-contrast-trump/index.html
