November 23, 2016: “On Bullshit and the Oath of Office: The “LOL Nothing Matters” Presidency.” By Quinta Jurecic, Managing Editor of Lawfare Three days after Trump was inaugurated Jurecic prophesied that his “foundational disrespect for meaning and consequence – that is to say, for reality and the very concept of law – would make it “impossible for Donald Trump to faithfully execute the laws of this nation and the duties of the oath of office and to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.”
Jurecic also made “a modest suggestion: As long as Donald Trump is President of the United States, “On Bullshit” should be assigned reading in every class in American civics or government at both the high school and college level.”
Harry G. Frankfurt, a professor of philosophy emeritus at Princeton University, makes the following distinction In his 2005 essay “On Bullshit”: “It is impossible for someone to lie unless he thinks he knows the truth. Producing bullshit requires no such conviction” since it is a habit “unconstrained by a concern with truth” whose essence is “not of falsity but of fakery.”
A bullshitter “does not care whether the things he says describe reality correctly. He just picks them out, or makes them up, to suit his purpose”, and he “does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.”
