Armed vigilantes detain migrants –their leader is busted after NM governor calls the Feds

❝ Armed rightwing militia members detained a large group of migrants at the US-Mexico border and coordinated with US border patrol agents to have them arrested, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, in a series of actions the civil liberties organization called a “kidnapping” and a flagrant violation of the law….

❝ The so-called United Constitutional Patriots posted several live-stream Facebook videos this week that appeared to detail their activities at the border…

❝ Nora Meyers Sackett, the spokesperson for New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, told the Guardian her office was working with the attorney general to “verify what exactly happened regarding this group”, adding in an email, “If migrant families feel menaced or threatened at all when they arrive at our border, that’s completely unacceptable, and it should go without saying that regular citizens have no authority to arrest or detain anyone…”

❝ The head of the militia group…was arrested Saturday by the FBI on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition…

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, who lives in the tiny village of Flora Vista in San Juan County, was arrested in Sunland Park, a border town near El Paso, the FBI said in a statement…

❝ “This is a dangerous felon who should not have weapons around children and families,” New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas said of Hopkins in a statement issued Saturday. “Today’s arrest by the FBI indicates clearly that the rule of law should be in the hands of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes.”

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a Twitter message a day before Hopkins’ arrest, “We are actively working with @NewMexicoAOG as well as local and state police. Menacing or threatening migrant families and asylum-seekers is absolutely unacceptable and must cease.”

Just a few of the fascist-minded fools who infest rightwing America.

  1. Robert DePugh says:

A leader of an armed militia that has held hundreds of migrants at the border previously claimed the group was training to assassinate Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, according to court documents unsealed on Monday. FBI agents visited Larry Mitchell Hopkins’ Flora Vista, New Mexico, residence in November 2017 after learning of the alleged statement. The 69-year-old Hopkins — who is also known as Johnny Horton Jr. — was charged Monday with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition stemming from the 2017 search, according to a criminal complaint. The US Attorney’s Office declined to say why Hopkins was charged more than a year after his residence was searched.

  2. Yippee-ki-yay says:

N.M. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gavin Clarkson previously appeared in a Facebook video with Hopkins’ armed, masked vigilantes, during which Clarkson, a former Trump administration official in the Department of Interior and former congressional and Secretary of State candidate, was asked if he feels what the group is doing is “legit.”
“Absolutely,” Clarkson said, adding he showed up to for first-hand research.“I heard what y’all were doing down here and I wanted to see it for myself,” Clarkson said near the end of the video. “And basically what I see is honest, sincere patriots who want to protect the country, who are not here as sort of gun-happy Rambos, yes they’re armed, but it’s dangerous out here. But Border Patrol is thanking these people every day for their help.”
This weekend, after news broke nationally of the group’s actions along the border, Clarkson distanced himself from the group. “I believe that the rule of law is the exclusive role of law enforcement authorities. Masked militiamen are the antithesis of what a free republic looks like,” Clarkson wrote. “I absolutely condemn their lawless activities. Period.”
On Monday, Clarkson further distanced himself from the group. He told the Las Cruces Sun-News that the group’s leader, Larry Mitchell Hopkins, had lied to him.

  3. Meanwhile, back at the ranch... says:

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Reuters) – The leader of a paramilitary group that has detained undocumented migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border pleaded not guilty to federal weapons charges on Monday and was denied bail. Moments before Hopkins was first scheduled to stand and face U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Molzen, a U.S. Marshal told the courtroom to evacuate the building for a bomb threat. Nothing was found, and authorities did not elaborate on the threat.
