“…At one point, Trump called out Steve Cortes, who serves as a member of Trump’s Hispanic Advisory Council, from the podium. “He happens to be Hispanic, but I’ve never quite figured it out, because he looks more like a WASP than I do,” Trump said. “But I tell you what, there is nobody that loves his country more or is Hispanic more than Steve Cortes. Nobody loves the Hispanics more.” [turns to Cortez in audience off-camera] “Who do you like more, the country or the Hispanics?” [unintelligible answer, Trump turns back to camera] “He says the country. I don’t know. I may have to go for the Hispanics, to be honest with you. We’ve got a lot of Hispanics. We love our Hispanics. Get out and vote.”

The new state director for the president’s re-election campaign in New Mexico is Leslie White, the executive director of the Arizona Republican Party and the Trump Regional Director for the area that includes New Mexico is Brian Seitchik, a political consultant who is a former executive director of the Arizona GOP.

New Mexico’s first governor was a man named Lew Wallace. Wallace, who also wrote the American classic “Ben-Hur,” was a Civil War hero sent by President Rutherford B. Hayes to govern the territory after it was seized from Mexico. On April 29, 1881 Wallace wrote a two page letter to his wife Susan in which he observed that “All calculations based on our experiences elsewhere fail in New Mexico.”
