  2. Cui bono? says:

(CNN 1:34 PM ET, Wed January 29, 2020): “White House has issued formal threat to Bolton to keep him from publishing book” https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/29/politics/donald-trump-john-bolton-white-house-book/index.html In a letter to Bolton’s lawyer, a top official at the National Security Council wrote the unpublished manuscript of Bolton’s book “appears to contain significant amounts of classified information” and couldn’t be published as written.
The letter, which is dated January 23, said some of the information was classified at the “top secret” level, meaning it “reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave harm to the national security.”
“The manuscript may not be published or otherwise disclosed without the deletion of this classified information,” the letter reads. See http://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2020/images/01/29/attachment.1.pdf

Charles Cooper, a lawyer for former national security adviser John Bolton, said in a statement to The Associated Press and other news outlets on Sunday that he submitted Bolton’s manuscript to the National Security Council’s Records Management Division to review its contents for classified information on Dec. 30, a standard practice for former government officials writing books. Cooper said he was given assurances at the time that the manuscript would not be seen by those outside staffers involved in the review process.

Also: “John Bolton raised the alarm about the firing of former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch last year — telling the House Foreign Affairs Committee to look into her sacking because he thought it was suspect.
New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the committee’s Democratic chairman, revealed Wednesday that Bolton called him in September, shortly after he was ousted as President Trump’s national security adviser, and “strongly implied” her dismissal was improper.
“President Trump is wrong that John Bolton didn’t say anything about the Trump-Ukraine Scandal at the time the President fired him. He said something to me,” Engel said in a statement released Wednesday morning.” https://nypost.com/2020/01/29/john-bolton-warned-house-committee-about-marie-yovanovitch-firing-last-year/

The New York Times, also citing anonymous sources, reported that lawyers for the National Security Council and the Justice Department debated whether opening the investigation would be viewed as a political act with just seven weeks remaining before Trump faces former Vice President Joe Biden on November 3 national polls.” See also https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/15/us/politics/john-bolton-book-criminal-investigation.html
