I think the calculation is as follows for Sweden: 1) containment is not possible at this point 2) everyone will take the same hit, either stretched out over time or in a single blow 3) we estimate that we can take the hit all at once 4) we choose to get it over with, thank you very much.
The strategy assumes that effective herd immunity will develop and that a containment strategy is practically impossible, neither of which is a reliable assumption.
