How Republicans “protect” the legacy of Abraham Lincoln

On Tuesday evening, the Lincoln Memorial was a place only for the police and troopers who, standing behind metal barriers, kept the public away.

Masked troops — some wearing vests that read “military police” but most simply in camouflage battle dress — stood in even rows on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday. They appeared to be National Guard, but many lacked flags, name tags or other identifying badges.

Welcome to the Fascist Nation of 21st Century America. That’s neither an abuse or even overuse of the term. The definition fits better and better every day remaining of the Fake President in office.

  1. Insurgent says:

(NYT 2004): “For decades, the American military’s war-fighting paradigm has been provided by football: the massing and coordinated movement of overwhelming force, replete with a playbook of long bombs, end runs, blitzes and, most explicitly, the “Hail Mary” maneuver that sealed General Schwarzkopf’s victory against Iraq in 1991. But this year, American defense experts debated the heretical possibility that the United States armed forces could learn more from soccer than from the Super Bowl.
Late last year, The Armed Forces Journal published “Football vs. Soccer: American Warfare in an Era of Unconventional Threats,” an article by Joel Cassman, a career Foreign Service officer, and David Lai, a professor at the United States Air War College. Soccer, they wrote, is the model for unconventional forces like terrorist organizations and guerrilla insurgencies: like a soccer team, they use finesse, patience, surprise attack, improvisation and low technology and make a virtue out of decentralized control and execution.”

“The Pentagon’s hand-me-downs helped militarize police. Here’s how : $7.4 billion of DOD gear sent to more than 8,000 law enforcement agencies.”

  3. Rule of law™ says:

“The Trump administration’s aggressive deployment of officers donning riot gear with no identifiable markings has increased tensions with protesters, raised the specter of a “secret police” force and prompted Speaker Nancy Pelosi to demand that President Trump identify the federal forces he has put on the streets of the capital.” (NYT 6/4/20)

    • Update says:

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser requested Friday that President Donald Trump remove all additional federal law enforcement and military presence from the city, arguing that the units are “inflaming” and “adding to the grievances” of people protesting over the death of George Floyd.
“The protestors have been peaceful, and last night, the Metropolitan Police Department did not make a single arrest. Therefore, I am requesting that you withdraw all extraordinary law enforcement and military presence from Washington, DC,” Bowser wrote in a letter to the President, adding that she has ended the state of emergency in DC related to the protests. (CNN 11:22 AM ET, Fri June 5, 2020)

“…The city’s status as a district, not a state, allows the President, and in turn the federal government, more leeway. Combined, at least 5,800 troops, agents, and officers have taken to the streets of the District.
Among them are personnel from the national guard, US Secret Service, US Park Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration, US Marshals Service, Bureau of Prisons, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Protective Service and the Transportation Security Administration.”
