Black militia calls out white nationalists at Confederate monument

About 1,000 heavily armed militia, all of whom were Black, marched through Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park on Saturday, challenging white nationalist groups in the area to either come out and fight or join them in demonstrating against the government.

Stone Mountain State Park officials said the Black militia group was peaceful, orderly and escorted by police as they called for the removal of the country’s largest Confederate monument near Atlanta.

Videos posted to social media show the group, the “Not F**king Around Coalition” (NFAC), meeting at the massive nine-story quartz sculpting that depicts former Confederate president Jefferson Davis and Southern generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

“We want change that’s really going to permanently help us, we don’t want [any] little change, we want some real change,” one of the organizers said, noting that many Black civil rights groups have been marching for change since the 1960s and have largely been ignored.

In some ways, this is an interesting [and unintended] side effect of an economy, an educational system, that pretty much reserves all the crap jobs for the non-white civilian population. Our military is often a better alternative. I’ve had beaucoup friends who got their GED plus a chunk of college-level education in Uncle Sugar’s armed forces. Learning how to handle serious weapons along the way is another useful skill – living in a violent, racist society.

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” Frederick Douglass (1818~1895)

“Drivers target Black Lives Matter protesters in ‘horrifying’ spate of attacks” “Sustained demonstrations across the US calling for racial justice and an end to police brutality in the wake of the May killing of George Floyd are being met with a rising trend for apparent counter-protesters using vehicles to threaten or slam into marchers.
Tension has also continued between protesters and police in some areas, with reports of law enforcement officers confronting crowds with flash-bang grenades and pepper spray.
In several US cities there has been a spate of people driving into protesters, with reports of multiple injuries and at least one death.
Last month a report from the University of Chicago’s Project on Security and Threats concluded that rightwing extremists were behind at least 50 vehicle-ramming incidents since the latest waves of protests began in late May.”

(July 26, 2020) An armed Black Lives Matter protester confronted a car that drove toward a march. The driver fatally shot him. “[George] Foster’s death comes as more Black Lives Matter protesters are showing up armed to demonstrations nationwide, raising concerns about confrontations with police and armed counterprotesters. In Louisville on Saturday, hundreds of activists marched the streets of Breonna Taylor’s hometown carrying assault rifles and demanding charges against the police officers who fatally shot her in March. The group was met with counterprotests from an armed white militia. Police, dressed in full riot gear, kept them apart.
In Texas, where open carry is legal, it’s not uncommon to see armed protesters.”

“Austin police release footage showing the killing of Mike Ramos : The release of the video comes two days after armed protester Garrett Foster was shot and killed by an unnamed, armed driver while protesting police brutality in Austin.” Mike Ramos, an unarmed Black and Latino man who was killed as he pulled out of a parking space in April after officers first shot him with “less-lethal” munition.

ATLANTA (Reuters 8/14/20) – “With internet rumors of a looming conflict between an anti-government militia, white supremacist rally-goers and counter-protesters, Georgia state officials said Stone Mountain Park, famed for its huge rock carving of Confederate leaders, will be closed to the public on Saturday.
The Three Percenters militia had applied last month to hold a more than 2,000-strong rally “to defend and protect our history and second Amendment rights” on Aug. 15 at the park northeast of Atlanta. The application was denied by state officials, who cited violence at a similar event in 2016.
But several online groups, including one dubbed “Defending Stone Mountain,” vowed to march in the park anyway and asked participants to come with Confederate and U.S. flags. Another group, the Atlanta Antifacists, vowed to hold a counter-protest.”

“Heated and close to violent confrontations between armed right-wing militia members and black-masked counter-demonstrators were captured on video Saturday at Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial in Georgia.” (NY Post 8/15/20)
“The site is a notorious meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan, which was “reborn” atop it.
In 1915, the KKK was brought back on that mountain with a burning cross and advocates of the carvings were card carrying members of the hate group. After the mountain was complete, “a ‘neo-Confederate theme park’ emerged around the site, including a plantation house, a “Gone With the Wind” museum, according to a report from the Atlanta History Center, The New York Times reported. Since then, KKK members have gathered at Stone Mountain annually to hold rallies, according to the Times.”
