Facebook removed one of Donald Trump’s posts on its platform on Wednesday, concluding that it contained a video in which the president spread misinformation about the coronavirus. Twitter also required that a Trump campaign account remove the video before it could tweet again.
The posts featured a clip from a Fox News interview in which the president said that children are almost immune from the coronavirus. On Fox & Friends earlier on Wednesday, Trump said, “If you look at children, children are almost — and I would almost say definitely, but almost immune from this disease, so few.”
A Facebook spokesperson said that the clip “includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation or our policies around harmful COVID misinformation.” This was the first time that Facebook removed one of Trump’s posts for coronavirus misinformation. It’s still unclear the extent to which children contact the virus and spread it to other people. https://deadline.com/2020/08/donald-trump-facebook-coronavirus-1203005552/
Trump made the comment during the interview as he continued to push for schools to open this fall despite the coronavirus pandemic, including rising cases across much of the U.S. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/510790-trump-campaign-fires-back-at-facebook-removal-of-trump-post-flagrant-bias

“Trump pushes for schools to reopen as US sees deadliest Covid day since May : US leads world in coronavirus infections and deaths” (Guardian UK 8/13/20) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/13/coronavirus-trump-schools-us-deaths-covid
“A total of 1,499 deaths from Covid-19 were reported across the country, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The US continues to lead the world in infections and deaths, with nearly 5.2 million people having contracted the virus, and more than 166,000 having died since the pandemic started.
The parlous situation has not deterred Trump from agitating for the reopening of schools and businesses, however, with the president warning that children would suffer if they do not resume in-person classes.
Trump also threatened to divert federal funding away from schools if they didn’t reopen.
“We got to open up,” Trump said on Wednesday. “We got to open up our schools and open up our businesses.” The president added that children “often have only mild symptoms, and medical complications are incredibly rare – very, very, very rare. Those that do face complications often have underlying medical conditions.”

Meanwhile: “There has been a 90% increase in the number of Covid-19 cases among children in the United States over the last four weeks, according to a new analysis by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association that will be updated weekly.” (8/11/20) https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/11/health/covid-19-children-cases-rising-wellness/index.html

“CDC Changes This Big Coronavirus Rule for Schools” https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/cdc-changes-big-coronavirus-rule-110135340.html “On Friday, the Centers of Disease Control revised its guidelines to put an emphasis on the importance of face-to-face instruction. “We owe it to our nation’s children to take personal responsibility to do everything we can to lower the level of Covid-19, so that we can all get back to school safely,” CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Friday.”

“The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday that teachers don’t need to be formally recognized as “critical workers,” a designation that would potentially exempt them from COVID-19 quarantine requirements.
“I think they didn’t need to be formally recognized as critical infrastructure workers, because in fact, I think we all know they are,” Robert Redfield said during a rare call with reporters.
New guidance from the Department of Homeland Security issued earlier this week classifies teachers as “critical infrastructure workers,” which means they are advised to keep working even if they have been exposed to the coronavirus, as long as they are asymptomatic.” https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/513146-cdc-director-says-teachers-dont-need-critical-label

Florida’s state government cannot force schools to reopen this month, a judge ruled yesterday. The state’s order to reopen K-12 schools disregarded safety risks posed by COVID-19 and gave schools no meaningful alternative, according to the ruling issued by Judge Charles Dodson of the Second Judicial Circuit in Leon County. https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/florida-notice-of-appeal.pdf
Florida Education Association President Fedrick Ingram said in a press conference held via Zoom, “shame on our governor and our commissioner of education who recklessly told us we had to have a brick and mortar option no matter what,” according to the Orlando Sentinel.
“Teachers want to be back in school,” Ingram also said. “We don’t want to risk our own lives.” https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/education/os-ne-lawsuits-reopening-order-ruling-20200824-kz3fo7od45c2pc5jrdadzwpahy-story.html

“A report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association shows 74,160 new cases of coronavirus among children from August 6 to August 20. According to the report, this is an increase of 21 percent in cases over the past two weeks.
Cumulatively, there are currently at least 442,785 cases among children with eight states reporting cumulative case counts over 15,000, according to the study. In Florida, cases among children increased by nearly 9,000 in a two-week span, as many schools in the state began reopening.” (Newsweek 8/27/20) https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/over-70000-children-diagnosed-with-covid-since-early-august/ar-BB18qzx4
“Children can carry coronavirus in their noses and throats for weeks even if they don’t show any symptoms, which might explain how the virus can spread silently, researchers in South Korea reported Friday.
