“President Trump received an experimental antibody cocktail as part of a treatment regimen for covid-19 he has extolled as “miracles coming down from God,” even though its development relied on human fetal tissue his administration opposes.
The effectiveness of the antibody therapy was tested by employing a fetal tissue cell line from the 1980s widely used in biomedical research, according to the biotech company manufacturing it, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. The cell line is old enough that it would fall outside restrictions on federal funding of fetal tissue research the Trump administration imposed last year, according to National Institutes of Health guidelines.
But the president’s repeated praise for the antibody cocktail he got when he was first hospitalized nearly a week ago has generated controversy given his clampdown on fetal tissue research at the behest of social conservatives crucial to his political base.”
A 2016 article published in the journal Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, exploring the history of use of human cell lines in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, noted that the same cell line, HEK293T, had led at that point to five therapies approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including to treat hemophilia and Type-2 diabetes.
“Doctors and medical staff working at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center when President Trump made a medical visit there last November were required to sign nondisclosure agreements, an unusual request that rankled some personnel, according to multiple people familiar with the episode.
Although the White House has described Trump’s stop at the hospital as part of a “routine” checkup, there were multiple signs that the visit was hastily arranged and did not follow the typical protocol for a planned presidential stop, according to the people, who, like others interviewed for this report, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the visit.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-walter-reed-nondisclosure-agreements/2020/10/08/50dbb71a-073b-11eb-a166-dc429b380d10_story.html
The former director of the office involved in developing a coronavirus vaccine blasted President Donald Trump on Thursday for urging Americans not to live in fear of the virus, calling the President’s words “probably the most reckless and deadly piece of information” he’s ever heard.
“This is a deadly pandemic. This is a deadly virus. The messaging that President Trump gave to America and the world when he left the hospital about there is no need to be afraid of this virus is probably the most reckless and deadly piece of information I have ever heard,” Dr. Rick Bright told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead.”
Bright, who filed an extensive whistleblower complaint last spring alleging that his early warnings about the coronavirus had been ignored and that his caution about using hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 had led to his removal, noted that the deadly virus is easily transmittable because it’s airborne. https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/08/politics/rick-bright-cnntv/index.html
Trump falsely claims there’s ‘a cure’ for COVID-19 in rambling Facebook, Twitter posts https://mashable.com/article/donald-trump-covid-19-misinformation-twitter-facebook-cure/
Late Wednesday afternoon the president posted a rambling video to both social media platforms in which he claims, falsely, that there is “a cure” for COVID-19. To be clear, according to the World Health Organization, “there are no medicines that have been shown to prevent or cure the disease.”
“President Donald Trump has struggled to convince the country he already won the election. So he’s just going to do the next best thing: Act like he’s starting his second term early.
Trump and his aides have settled on a plan for him to take full advantage of his existing perch at the White House to look as presidential as possible, according to three people briefed on the strategy. He may fire a few Cabinet members and top aides, including FBI Director Christopher Wray and Defense Secretary Mark Esper. He could sign a slew of base-pleasing executive orders. He might even resume his travel schedule. Meanwhile, Trump’s team is planning to mount even more legal challenges and cast evidence-deficient aspersions on the integrity of ballots.” https://news.yahoo.com/trump-prepares-launch-second-term-214943483.html
“Trump’s team “will flatly say they are wrong if the AP calls the race for Biden,” said former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a longtime Trump ally.
“Just as he promised the American people, President Trump is fighting hard for a free and fair election while at the same time running the country and carrying out his duties to put America First,” White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement.”
