MAGA Maggot Host
Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, has welcomed his acquittal in a second impeachment trial, saying his political movement “to Make America Great Again has only just begun”.
The US Senate voted 57-43 in favour of convicting the former president on Saturday, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict him on a charge of inciting the mob that attacked the US Capitol on January 6, during the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election win…
“Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun,” he said.
“In the months ahead, I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people,” he added.
And so, Trump sets out to split the Grand Old Party in two. He knew he never had the skill, smarts and talent, either alone or bought in the open market to build his own Fascist Party. He set out, successfully, to takeover the Republican Party. Boring scholars will dissect the history of how he did this.
What happens next, though, I find especially interesting. There is sufficient Republican talent, experience, and commitment to traditional American values (at least those values capable of getting up-to-date). They may try to regain the name “Republican Party” or build anew. The sort of simple minds that joined the Trump parade really require total continuity. They’re easily confused by name changes.
But, everything else that matters has over 120 traditional activists. Experienced, with access to a significant chunk of change, hopefully enough to bankroll a battle that would take four or five years, perhaps, eight or ten, to return the GOP to a semblance of something less racist, bigoted, insular and obedient.
The several factions within the Democrats should profit from the split and the battle to follow. Whether they learn enough in the process to move to unite around real progressive policy-making is the only part of this shitstorm I find interesting.
Critics of Donald Trump warned of historical parallels between the U.S. Capitol attack of 2021, and the Munich Putsch of 1923. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/nyt-1924-hitler-tamed-by-prison/
Too bad Trump can’t just hop a plane to a country without an extradition treaty like other failed dictators.
Former President Donald Trump and attorney Rudy Giuliani are being accused of conspiring with the far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to incite the January 6 insurrection in a civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court by the Democratic chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. The suit cites a post-Civil War law designed to combat violence and intimidation by the Ku Klux Klan.
The lawsuit, filed by Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson in his personal capacity, is the first civil action filed against the former President related to the attack at the US Capitol and comes days after the Senate acquitted Trump in his impeachment trial.
If it proceeds, it would mean the former President and others would be subject to discovery and depositions, potentially exposing details and evidence that weren’t released during the Senate impeachment trial.
The NAACP is backing the lawsuit and helping to represent Thompson in court. https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/16/politics/capitol-lawsuit-trump-giuliani-proud-boys-oath-keepers/index.html
