EPA underestimates pollution from oil and natgas production — A LOT!

The Environmental Protection Agency is underestimating methane emissions from oil and gas production in its annual Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, according to new research from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The research team found 90 percent higher emissions from oil production and 50 percent higher emissions for natural gas production than EPA estimated in its latest inventory…

The research team, led by Joannes Maasakkers, a former graduate student at SEAS, developed a method to trace and map total emissions from satellite data to their source on the ground…

…Researchers compared…simulations to satellite observations from 2010-2015. Using a transport model, they were able to trace the path of emissions from the atmosphere back to the ground and identify areas across the US where the observations and simulations didn’t match up.

“When we look at emissions from space, we can only see how total emissions from an area should be scaled up or down, but we don’t know the source responsible for those emissions,” said Maasakkers. “Because we spent so much time with the EPA figuring out where these different emissions occur, we could use our transport model to go back and figure out what sources are responsible for those under- or over-estimations in the national total.”

The biggest discrepancy was in emissions from oil and natural gas production.

You know what the next question should be. “What will federal regulators do with this understanding of much greater pollution coming from oil and natgas production?”

Eh?

Eat processed meat daily – increase your risk of dementia!

Man, I love bacon – I eat it about 8 times a year!

Scientists from the University of Leeds’s Nutritional Epidemiology Group used data from 500,000 people, discovering that consuming a 25g serving of processed meat a day, the equivalent to one rasher of bacon, is associated with a 44% increased risk of developing dementia.

But their findings also show eating some unprocessed red meat, such as beef, pork, or veal, could be protective, as people who consumed 50g a day were 19% less likely to develop dementia.

The researchers were exploring a potential link between consumption of meat and the development of dementia, a health condition that affects 5%-8% of over 60s worldwide.

Their results, titled “Meat consumption and risk of incident dementia: cohort study of 493888 UK Biobank participants,” are published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Republican dedication to tradition

Thanks, gocomics.org

Cripes! I remember the transition. Democrats relied on the Solid South…racism, Jim Crow laws and all, to stay in power for decades. Then, as a result of pressure from the growing civil rights movement, they relented. They figured they better join the nation changing in a progressive direction.

As a result, the Republican Party took over state government in all the most racist states. That’s what “Republican tradition” means in most of the South. It goes back to the success of freedom fighters at the federal level…and your friendly neighborhood bigots simply changing parties.

American South: racist voters still elect Racist Scum

Georgia’s governor signed ‘Jim Crow’ voting bill
under painting of a slave plantation

The Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Will Bunch created a Twitter thread about a painting of a Georgia plantation that is hanging behind Kemp in the photograph. Writing about the history of the Callaway plantation in Wilkes county, Georgia, Bunch said the place depicted “thrived because of the back-breaking labor of more than 100 slaves who were held in cruel human bondage”.

While Georgia’s Bigot-in-Chief signed the bill into law, a Black woman who is a member of the state legislature knocked on the entrance to the locked door ceremony…demanding to witness this travesty…the governor had her arrested.

State Rep. Park Cannon…arrested after she attempted
to knock on the door of Gov. Brian Kemp’s office

What passes for “Law and Order” in a state run by corrupt bigots. Republican, Democrat or Independent, policies and practices like these should be shoveled back into the outhouse dungpile that is our racist history.

Sports “supplement” is 80-year-old stimulant NEVER Approved for oral consumption

An experimental stimulant drug from the World War II era is showing up in weight loss and sports supplements sold today, according to a new study.

The stimulant, known as phenpromethamine, was last sold as a nasal inhaler called Vonedrine in the 1940s and 1950s, but it has since been withdrawn from the market and has never been approved for oral use, according to the study, published Tuesday (March 23) in the journal Clinical Toxicology. It’s also banned from competitive sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The new study appears to be the first to confirm the presence of phenpromethamine in supplements, the authors said.

In addition to phenpromethamine, the study identified eight other prohibited stimulants in sports and weight loss supplements, which were often found mixed together in various combinations to create “cocktails” of stimulant drugs that have never been studied in people…

These products were usually marketed as weight loss supplements or sport supplements. (A full list of these supplement brands can be found in the study.)

Maybe we can get the FDA back in the business of trying to protect consumers instead of allowing leftover drugs weaseled back into consumption by unprincipled producers.

“The work continues…”

Cyrus Vance, Jr
Widline Cadet/NewYorker

On February 22nd, in an office in White Plains, two lawyers handed over a hard drive to a Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, who, along with two investigators, had driven up from New York City in a heavy snowstorm. Although the exchange didn’t look momentous, it set in motion the next phase of one of the most significant legal showdowns in American history. Hours earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered former President Donald Trump to comply with a subpoena for nearly a decade’s worth of private financial records, including his tax returns. The subpoena had been issued by Cyrus Vance, Jr., the Manhattan District Attorney, who is leading the first, and larger, of two known probes into potential criminal misconduct by Trump. The second was opened, last month, by a county prosecutor in Georgia, who is investigating Trump’s efforts to undermine that state’s election results.

Vance is a famously low-key prosecutor, but he has been waging a ferocious battle. His subpoena required Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars U.S.A., to turn over millions of pages of personal and corporate records, dating from 2011 to 2019, that Trump had withheld from prosecutors and the public. Before Trump was elected, in 2016, he promised to release his tax records, as every other modern President has done, and he repeated that promise after taking office. Instead, he went to extraordinary lengths to hide the documents. The subpoena will finally give legal authorities a clear look at the former President’s opaque business empire, helping them to determine whether he committed any financial crimes. After Vance’s victory at the Supreme Court, he released a typically buttoned-up statement: “The work continues.”

Sock it to him, Cy!

Oath Keeper planned coordinated action with Proud Boys before riot

Reuters

A reputed leader in the Oath Keepers militia group discussed forming an “alliance” and coordinating plans with another extremist group, the Proud Boys, ahead of the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, according to new court papers.

The court filing — detailing messages from Kelly Meggs, described by authorities as the leader of the Florida chapter of the Oath Keepers — is the first time prosecutors have suggested that the members of the two far-right extremist groups were communicating with each other before coming to Washington.

Meggs is among 10 members and associates of the Oath Keepers charged with plotting to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. The case against those affiliated with the Oath Keepers is the largest conspiracy case brought by prosecutors so far in the attack.

Several members of the Proud Boys, who describe themselves as a politically incorrect men’s club for “Western chauvinists,” have also been charged with conspiring to obstruct Congress.

On Dec. 19, Meggs wrote in a Facebook message that he “organized an alliance” between the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys and Florida Three Percenters, an anti-government movement.

We have decided to work together and shut this s—t down,” Meggs wrote…

No surprises…other than these ego-smitten, middle class reactionaries didn’t have the smarts to keep from bragging before, during and after the fact about their plan to disrupt the constitutionally-required counting of ballots.
