“Wokeification” scares the crap out of rightwing nutballs

A commander in the US Space Force was removed from his position following comments he made on podcasts promoting his new book that claims that Marxist ideologies are spreading in the US military…

“That wasn’t just prolific in social media, or throughout the country during this past year, but it was spreading throughout the United States military,” he added. “And I had recognized those narratives as being Marxist in nature.”

[Cue the theme from TWILIGHT ZONE]

He also said practices like mandatory diversity and inclusion training, which Republicans have also rejected, create divisiveness in the US, according to Military.com.

So far, it seems that opposing racist and sexist practices are dangerous symptoms of being “woke”. Guess I’ve been “woke” for several decades. I always thought I was standing up for the best advice we ever received from the founders of this nation. And beyond.

“One year after the death of George Floyd, there is widespread recognition that America’s national reckoning on race still has a long way to go. But another thing is becoming clear: data suggests public opinion on racial justice issues has changed dramatically, powering a sustained and historically significant wave of activism among white Americans.
It’s a development with wide-ranging political and policy implications, creating the conditions for rethinking approaches to policing, criminal justice, housing and health care disparities, to name a few.
…The question, however, is whether this change in public opinion is fleeting or a sign of a new state of racial consciousness among white Americans. Researchers have warned about the need for caution in declaring decisive victories.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw’s search for ‘woke military’ complaints draws ridicule — and war movie quotes https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2021/06/03/dan-crenshaw-woke-military/

“We won’t let our military fall to woke ideology,” Crenshaw said Friday on Twitter.
Crenshaw’s appeal, co-led by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a fellow veteran, is a new front in a Republican attack on Defense Department leaders that was prompted by military policy changes, including those that have focused on weeding out extremist troops and removing barriers that have held back women.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson and others have pilloried such changes, calling them attacks on conservatives in uniform and evidence of an “emasculated military,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) said.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin tangled Thursday over the Pentagon’s efforts to bolster diversity, equity and inclusion in the military.
Cotton repeatedly cut off Austin, the nation’s first Black Defense secretary, as the Pentagon leader sought to provide context on racial issues in the armed forces during a Senate hearing.
The exchanges came on the heels of Cotton and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) — two combat veterans — launching a web portal for “whistleblowers” to report examples of “woke ideology” in the military. https://thehill.com/policy/defense/557818-cotton-pentagon-chief-tangle-over-diversity-training-in-military

Rick Berman, an infamous right-wing lobbyist whose organizations have been accused of several astroturfing campaigns—and who is known as “Dr. Evil”—revealed that his firm is behind an organization that claimed to be a grass-roots movement against New York City’s prep schools focus on “diversity education.” https://www.vice.com/en/article/g5g5ny/researcher-uncovers-critical-race-theory-astroturfing-campaign

“CRT is a decades-old set of ideas from the legal academy, which began to be a low-grade source of right-wing panic about racism during the Obama administration. Since the anti-racism protests of 2020 and the end of the Trump administration, though, it has rapidly become an all-purpose term to attack any sort of discussion of the history or current conditions of racial inequity in America.” https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/06/florida-critical-race-theory-ban-what-it-tells-us-about-anti-anti-racism.html
