Unvaccinated are “variant factories”

Unvaccinated people do more than merely risk their own health. They’re also a risk to everyone if they become infected with coronavirus, infectious disease specialists say.

That’s because the only source of new coronavirus variants is the body of an infected person.

“Unvaccinated people are potential variant factories,” Dr. William Schaffner, a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN Friday.

“The more unvaccinated people there are, the more opportunities for the virus to multiply,” Schaffner, a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said.

“When it does, it mutates, and it could throw off a variant mutation that is even more serious down the road.”

This ain’t news. The failure of sufficient immunization ain’t news either. Both are repetitive examples of mediocre health education in our school systems. Altogether, the sum of cowardice of government, politicians in and out of office, to confront superstition, religion and just plain ignorance in our society.

To say that unvaccinated are a risk to EVERYBODY is a bit hyperbolic, Mr Eiderd. Surely not a risk to those who are vaccinated, those have earned immunity the hard way or those who have other means of prophylaxis.

There is also an argument that vaccination during a pandemic provides the virus an evolutionary window to mutate its way around the vaccines narrow focus on the spike protein. Lets hope this never happens.

If you are really worried about the covids, get the jab(s) and relax.

Haven’t heard of any COVID mutations without a spike protein. Yes, there still isn’t a shortage of individuals who work at finding rationales against vaccination. And heavier-than-air flight.

Been there, done that, early days. Please pay attention to mutated delta variants which science didn’t get to test under any circumstances until they appeared. While both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines so far keep vaccinated safe from COVID-19, the latest variant has a qualitatively higher and easier transmission rate … including aerosol. With a mask, for example, you aren’t as likely to inhale or exhale the bugs during your passage through others.

Even though we’re confidant in our vaccinations, Helen and I resumed wearing masks in public. Thinking of others is useful practice. Even aside from social questions.

Yes the same goes for mutating in the unvaccinated. Surely the virus would have to evolve away from the spike protein to get around the vaccine. Not impossible given enough time, but unlikely to my untrained mind.

If only we were wise enough to listen to the doctors actually treating the covids, embrace the full range of effective treatments available and not just be reliant on emergency use vaccines with no long term safety profile and expensive snake oil such as remdesivir. We might just get through this pandemic.

19th Century answer…even for an “untrained mind”. Statisticians have better answers. First we need to survive. In the GOUSA, the effective rate of the 2 main vaccines is proving higher than 98% though tests offered less. Fact remains 99% or more of the 600,000 pandemic dead here were unvaccinated. We can prattle and test further – which, of course, continues – over coming years. The vaccinated will be running the tests.

Given that the death rate of the covids is far less than 1% I’m pretty sure humanity will survive the virus. I’m less certain about the political, social and economic consequences of the pandemic.

Public heath is not run by doctors and scientists. Its an institution run by politicians, bureaucrats and pharmaceutical multinationals, Forgive me for trusting in the word of doctors on the covid frontline over that nest of vipers.

No doubt the vaccines are currently effective. If you are worried about the covids, get the jab. Its not rocket surgery. However, it is wise to consider that the long term effects are unknown. Some flaws in the mRNA vaccine design may also cause short term issues or death for some, and the toxicity of the spike protein in the adenovirus vaccines may also cause issues or death for some people. Obviously the vast majority will be fine. Do you feel lucky, punk?

Garden variety masks don’t really protect you very much. Something like 20% effective. However they are up to 80% effective in protecting others from you in incidental contact. The only really effective mask strategy is everyone wears them indoors in public. The virus does not spread outside and is very susceptible to UV so wearing a mask outdoors is pretty much unnecessary unless you are in very close contact with others for an extended period of time.

Since we have no idea actually how many people have actually had covid, since it does not present much of the time, the subsequent immune population of covid survivors could be a hefty chunk of the population. Pretty sure these covid survivors will also be running the tests 😛

Anyway, is good to know that yourself and Helen have had the jab and suffered from no mutations or alien broadcasts.

Though the state of Alaska currently has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases in the country, Governor Mike Dunleavy is focusing on fighting federal vaccine mandates.
Dunleavy signed an administrative order Tuesday that prohibits all state agencies from participating in or assisting with federal vaccine mandates for employers. The order also tasks the state’s attorney general with reviewing all federal vaccine mandates and looking for ways to challenge them in court.
Last week, Alaska also joined nine other states in filing a lawsuit challenging the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate for federal contractors. And in an opinion piece published Monday on a far-right political website, Dunleavy vowed that Alaska would also take legal action against an upcoming rule by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration to compel companies with 100 or more employees to require vaccination or regular testing. White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said Wednesday that the rule will be coming in a matter of days.
Meanwhile, vaccine mandates continue to prove effective in other states.

Have to do this one. It’s a long story; but, under different circumstances, I would have been working with these folks well beyond the late 1960’s when I left New Haven for a truly unsuccessful adventure..
