Whatever your politics, please stop phony stories

Here’s the post as it appeared on FACEBOOK:

LEAD STORIES reverse image searched the photos in the Facebook post, which led to a Mirror.co.uk article. That article gave a source of the video: CJ Werleman, currently a global correspondent for Byline Times.

Werleman posted the video on his Twitter account on October 22, 2015.

While searching for the original video, LEAD STORIES came across the name and nationality of the girl in the Facebook post. According to a Vox article, she is Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi. She was 12 when the video was shot in November 2012, the article said. This is not the only time Tamimi has had a hostile encounter with Israeli troops. In August 2018, she spent eight months in an Israeli prison for slapping two Israeli soldiers. The Washington Post’s YouTube channel has a video that shows Tamimi hitting them.

The bravery is real. Everything else in the FACEBOOK post describing the photos is a lie.

Daylight Savings Time – a Permanent Shift?

The more Maryland Del. Brian M. Crosby let himself consider the groggy, discombobulated misery of adjusting to daylight saving time, the more ridiculous it seemed…

And so Crosby (D-St. Mary’s) steered Maryland into a nationwide debate that — in just four years — spread to Congress and legislatures in 41 of the 48 states that observe daylight saving time. This month, Crosby won over the state’s House of Delegates, which voted to permanently shift daytime so that an extra hour of sunlight lands in the afternoon year-round — pending congressional approval.

The national surge to make daylight saving time permanent unites unlikely bedfellows who say Americans can transcend our political divides to abolish the century-old practice of changing our clocks. Research has linked the time-shift to an uptick in everything from heart attacks and miscarriages to fatal traffic accidents and workplace injuries. But debate rages over whether the healthier solution is to abandon daylight saving time or make it year round.

I vote for year-round. Read the article to examine both sides.

Why is our “Doomsday Plane” practicing over Nebraska?

The U.S. Air Force’s nuclear-bomb-resistant “doomsday plane” took to the skies for a brief training mission Monday (Feb. 28), shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he would be putting his country’s nuclear forces on high alert, according to news reports.

The doomsday plane — a modified Boeing 747 named the Boeing E-4B — took off from a U.S. Air Force base in Nebraska, then completed a 4.5-hour flight toward Chicago and back before landing again, British news site iNews reported. During this brief sortie, the plane was reportedly accompanied by several early-warning jets used to track ballistic missiles.

The E-4B is part of a fleet of so-called Nightwatch aircraft maintained by the U.S. military since the 1970s. The plane’s purpose is to serve as a mobile command headquarters for top military personnel in the event of a nuclear war, Live Science previously reported, and the aircraft contains a few safety features you won’t likely see on a commercial 747. For one, the $200 million plane is equipped with antiquated analog equipment, rather than modern digital equipment, to allow the plane to continue operating even when exposed to the electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear blast.

Just in case you thought our government, our military, has made it into the 21st Century. And we can still worry about which one controls the other, eh?
