Poland is sending German tanks to Ukraine. Germany says “We won’t stand in the way…”

Asked what would happen if Poland went ahead and sent its Leopard 2 tanks without German approval, Baerbock said: “For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way.”…

Germany has been under considerable pressure both to deliver Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine and to allow other countries to send their German-made tanks to Ukrainian forces. But Berlin has been hesitant to send the highly advanced, Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine out of concern it could lead to a widening of the Russian war in Ukraine…

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the national Polish PAP news agency, “Germany’s attitude is unacceptable. It has been almost a year since the war began. Innocent people are dying every day.”

Quibbling over the perpetual drip of “acceptable” diplomatic language is about as boring as a so-called debate between the two miserable political parties we have here in the U.S.. Polite scores more points than content every time.

“Kremlin says European infighting over sending advanced tanks to Ukraine is a sign of weakness” https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-says-europe-squabble-over-tanks-ukraine-sign-of-weakness-2023-1

German troops invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, triggering World War II.
On the eve of his invasion, Hitler told his generals, “our enemies are…not men of action, not masters. They are little worms. I saw them at Munich.”
The invasion was referred to by Germany as the 1939 Defensive War (Verteidigungskrieg) since Hitler proclaimed that Poland had attacked Germany and that “Germans in Poland are persecuted with a bloody terror and are driven from their homes. The series of border violations, which are unbearable to a great power, prove that the Poles no longer are willing to respect the German frontier.”

During World War II, the Germans not only murdered millions of Poles, but ethnically cleansed millions more through forced deportation to make room for German settlers. These actions claimed the lives of 2.7 to 3 million Polish Jews and 1.8 to 2.77 million ethnic Poles, according to Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, which had been established in Warsaw in 1998.

German news magazine Der Spiegel and others published stories on Tuesday evening saying that the government in Berlin had decided to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Spiegel magazine reported that the decision would involve sending at least one company of Leopard 2A6 tanks. [One company usually comprises 14 tanks].
Spiegel attributed its information to government sources but did not identify them. Broadcaster ntv issued a similar report, and the dpa news agency later said its “coalition sources” had said the same. But the government did not immediately comment publicly on the reports.
German-made military equipment can only be sent to third countries with approval from Berlin. Spiegel reported that other European countries, including some in Scandinavia, would also supply their tanks to Kyiv.
Although Germany’s Defense Ministry, military, and several other actors would surely have been involved in discussions, ultimately the authority to make this decision rests with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. https://www.dw.com/en/germany-to-send-leopard-2-tanks-to-ukraine-reports/a-64503898

“Russian state TV reacted with acerbic putdowns on Wednesday to the news that the US and Germany had finally agreed to send tanks to Ukraine. The Rossiya-24 TV channel broadcast a series of mocking stories. In one on-air sequence titled ‘Toothless cats’, the presenter said the German-made tanks were ‘more primitive’, heavier, less maneuverable and had a shorter firing range compared with Russian T-90s.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2023/jan/26/toothless-leopards-and-battered-abrams-russian-tv-mocks-nato-tanks-promised-to-ukraine-video

Video: “Ukrainian operator, with the help of a drone that was developed by volunteers, destroyed the most modern Russian Т-90М tank.” (December 2022) https://mil.in.ua/en/news/ukrainian-uav-operator-destroyed-russian-t-90m-tank/
This is the eighth documented loss of a rare Russian Т-90М tank in Ukraine. The tank is produced in small series at the Russian UralVagonZavod tank plant.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are currently the world’s second largest users of the most modern Russian tank, the T-90.
It is publicly known about at least two tanks (1 and 2) that were taken by the Ukrainian military as trophies during the war with Russia and are used against the invaders in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
