Among the Insurrectionists

By Luke Mogelson

Balazs Gardi for The New Yorker

By the end of President Donald Trump’s crusade against American democracy—after a relentless deployment of propaganda, demagoguery, intimidation, and fearmongering aimed at persuading as many Americans as possible to repudiate their country’s foundational principles—a single word sufficed to nudge his most fanatical supporters into open insurrection. Thousands of them had assembled on the Mall, in Washington, D.C., on the morning of January 6th, to hear Trump address them from a stage outside the White House. From where I stood, at the foot of the Washington Monument, you had to strain to see his image on a jumbotron that had been set up on Constitution Avenue. His voice, however, projected clearly through powerful speakers as he rehashed the debunked allegations of massive fraud which he’d been propagating for months. Then he summarized the supposed crimes, simply, as “bullshit.”

This is Luke Mogelson’s story, published in THENEWYORKER. Click on the link in the first paragraph of his story. Read the article, a tale of woe, of ignorance, of racism and bigotry.

As night follows day…

Like every political sound from the lips of Bannon – or Trump – fraud, deceit, lies are never missing. Any serious scholar of history classifies what they are trying to start as a “counter-revolution”. Fascism is not a step forward. It carries us in a stream of offal, blood and death, back into obedience to authoritarian violence. An end to democracy.

Is Trump getting ready to pardon every fascist on the planet?

President Donald Trump is considering granting a pardon to Steve Bannon, his former White House chief strategist and top campaign aide, who was charged with swindling donors to a private crowdsourcing effort to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to two sources familiar with the matter…

Bannon, the former executive chairman of the right-wing Breitbart News, was one of four men indicted by a federal grand jury in New York in August on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with their roles in the non-profit group “We Build the Wall.”

Bannon has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, and is due to stand trial in May 2021…

Trump also has been considering giving preemptive pardons to as many as 20 close associates and family members, including his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and his children, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump, none of whom have been charged with a crime.

You have to understand. Trump entertains no concept of moral or ethical behavior. He may issue a blanket amnesty for the hundreds of his fascist supporters who attempted an insurrection against Congress on January 6th. He may try to pardon himself in advance of his departure from the presidency.

Pandemic update – unfortunately, after months of Trump

States are ramping up their Covid-19 vaccination programs so more people can be protected against the virus, but some governors are confused and angry because they don’t know how much vaccine the federal government will send them…

…On Friday, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told NBC News there is no “reserve stockpile” of Covid-19 vaccine doses left to release…

Dr. Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, called the federal government’s release of vaccine more of a “paper exercise.”

The stockpile appears to be all on paper; they were tracking anticipated need but not actually holding back product,” Plescia said…

President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday announced a plan — as part of a wider $1.9 trillion economic rescue proposal — to send $350 billion to state, local and territorial governments.

The money will be used in part to help distribute the vaccine, as well as to increase testing, keep frontline workers employed, reopen schools and maintain vital services…

Biden aims to vaccinate 100 million people in 100 days, and that’s a feasible goal, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday on NBC’s “Today” show.

“Even now, we’ve gone from half a million a day to 750,000 (doses) a day. I believe strongly that it (1 million per day) is doable — and if we do it, stay on target to get the overwhelming majority of the country vaccinated,” said Fauci…

If you expected better than this from Trump and his Republican Party…I think I can get you a great deal on a bridge for sale in Brooklyn.

Those who lie(d) for Trump should be held accountable

Don’t let the chronic liars cash in on their dishonesty. Press secretaries like Joe Lockhart, Ari Fleischer and Jay Carney, who left the White House with their reputations in various stages of intact, made millions taking their skills — and credibility — to corporate America. Trump’s liars don’t merit that same golden parachute. Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.

I second that emotion!
