Chart of the Day: Coal Mining in America

❝ OK, here’s a post with an image in it. And what better way than to visually deconstruct a Trump administration lie? Here is EPA chief Scott Pruitt this weekend:

Since the fourth quarter of last year until most recently, we’ve added almost 50,000 jobs in the coal sector. In the month of May alone, almost 7,000 jobs.

❝ And here’s the truth:

The actual increase since October is 1,700 jobs. But hey, that’s “almost” 50,000 jobs…

Not certain which strays furthest from truth and reality. Deliberate lies from thugs like Pruitt and his boss — or the self-delusion of Trump chumps, the folks who voted him into office and accept this crap as gospel.

Trump chumps fed their Daily Lie – without a burp of insight!

Her master’s voice

❝ Kellyanne Conway has taken “alternative facts” to a new level.

During a Thursday interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, the counselor to the president defended President Trump’s travel ban related to seven majority-Muslim countries. At one point, Conway made a reference to two Iraqi refugees whom she described as the masterminds behind “the Bowling Green massacre.”

“Most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered,” Conway said.

The Bowling Green massacre didn’t get covered because it didn’t happen. There has never been a terrorist attack in Bowling Green, Ky., carried out by Iraqi refugees or anyone else.

❝ It appeared initially that Conway was referring to two Iraqi citizens living in Bowling Green who were arrested in 2011 and eventually sentenced to federal prison for attempting to send weapons and money to al-Qaeda in Iraq for the purpose of killing U.S. soldiers…But the arrests there were indeed covered, contrary to what she said. A Lexis search of major papers turned up about 90 news stories. That’s not counting TV coverage…

❝ After Conway’s comments, “Bowling Green Massacre” was the No. 1 topic trending on Twitter, and Conway’s interview prompted many to share memories of where they were “when the Bowling Green Massacre didn’t happen.”

Authoritarians like Trump and his proto-fascist peers haven’t the least worry about their True Believers getting upset over the lies decanted from the White House like a daily dose of dragon piss. Imaginary tales from non-existent sources. But, the average American ignoranus isn’t accustomed to fact-checking on their own anymore than their political decisions require knowledge, reflective thought or understanding of any process involving history, economics or the Bill of Rights.

Sales of ‘1984’ spike after Kellyanne Conway’s ‘alternative facts’ blather

❝ On Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, called easily disproved claims made by White House press secretary Sean Spicer “alternative facts.”

A bewildered Chuck Todd responded, “Alternative facts are not facts. They are falsehoods.”

❝ While the phrase “alternative facts” reminded many of the terms “falsehoods,” “lies” and “untruths,” it reminded many others of George Orwell’s dystopian, politically charged novel “1984.”

❝ Not only were people inspired to tweet about that, they wanted to purchase a copy. By early Wednesday morning, the novel was the best-selling book on Amazon.com…

Sales of the novel also enjoyed a marked spike in 2013 — one edition experiencing a 10,000 percent jump in sales — following the leak of NSA documents.

❝ Many quotes from the book especially resonated with readers following Conway’s remarks.

“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command,” for example, reminded some of Spicer’s argument that Trump’s inauguration had record-breaking crowds, despite obvious evidence to the contrary…

❝ Perhaps the phrase “alternative facts” will soon have as much cultural currency as the terms Orwell penned more than a half-century ago, even though the former were said in earnest while Orwell’s were bitingly critical.

Maybe the mainstream media will even rise to brave clarity and describe Trump’s public statements as nothing more than bullshite.
