In freezing fog on an Oregon Interstate, Kaleb whitby slid his pickup truck into the butt end of a jackknifed, crashed semi. And then he saw another tractor-trailer sliding straight at him.

He gripped the steering wheel as tight as he could – and the second semi smashed through his pickup, crushing it.

The crash left only two things sort of intact: The twisted cab surrounding Whitby’s, and Whitby, pinned between the two trucks.

26 vehicles piled up in that crash.

One of the truck drivers asked Whitby if he could take this photo as they were figuring out how to get him free. Whitby said it was OK. No one would have believed this if it was described to them, no doubt.

They pulled his feet loose – and he slid out what used to be the driver’s side window.

He ended up with a couple of band-aids on small cuts and an icepack for a lump on his head. Oh, yeah, and then he got busy helping other folks from their cars before he let anyone drive him home.

Swedish motorist assures coppers he’s sober before complaining about camels blocking the road

No arrests were necessary

Police in Sweden said a man who called to report a herd of camels crossing a road assured officers that he was sober.

Investigators said the motorist called police early Monday and said he was traveling on a road in Stockaryd when he had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting a herd of five camels…

When the motorist called us, he began by saying he was sober,” Jonkoping police duty Officer Anneli Johnsson Hammo told the Smalands-Tidningen newspaper.

Hammo said the driver determined the camels escaped from a nearby traveling circus and alerted staff.

The camels were cleared from the road by circus workers and the driver was able to continue on his way.

Then, he stopped for a drink or two.

[I made that part up].

Sinkhole swallows car, driver climbs out and up a ladder to safety

A sinkhole swallowed a car as it was traveling down a street in Toledo, Ohio, and the 60-year-old driver climbed out of the hole using a ladder supplied by rescue workers…

A water main break or heavy rains may have caused the sinkhole to open up under the street on Wednesday as the woman was driving down it, fire department Lieutenant Tom Kuhman said.

“She saw the car in front of her kind of almost go in but her car, being already in motion, was unable to avoid it,” he said…

The woman was unhurt and climbed out of the hole using a ladder, helped by a firefighter.

The biggest city here in New Mexico is Albuquerque. Part of how it grew was the railroad going west along the Mexican border. A big part has been the military and our government’s devotion to weapons of mass destruction. Between air force bases and national labs like Sandia and Los Alamos, taxpayer dollars dedicated to death and destruction put three squares a day on a lot of New Mexico tables. Very little of that goes to infrastructure for civilians.

Albuquerque has as many as three water main failures a week like this. You can time construction matching the growth of the city to wars. World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War. When the water system was laid down and apparently targeting a 50-year-replacement cycle. Long past – and never done.

Yeah, another tale of infrastructure self-destructing around us and under us.

Distracted motorists have the most accidents at Stonehenge

Distracted motorists have more accidents passing Stonehenge than any other British landmark…

Over a third of drivers, 34 per cent, have had a prang or near miss in the UK as a result of taking their eyes off the road to admire a view…And an admiring 14 per cent have slammed on the brakes to get a longer look – typically reducing their speed by 27 mph…

The Angel of the North, in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, is the second most dangerous landmark and the Blackpool Tower, in Lancs, third.

A captivated 18 per cent and 12 per cent of motorists find their eyes drifting towards these sites as they pass…

Just over one in ten of these drivers, 11 per cent, have had or nearly had an accident at these two beauty spots.

Janet Connor, from MORE TH>N, said: “Travel guides, friends and family often encourage us to take the scenic route…But until now the perils of admiring the world beyond the windscreen have not been fully explored.

The UK is blessed with some amazing sights but motorists need to keep their eyes on the road and resist the lure of staring at them while driving…To avoid having an accident, park-up and enjoy the view safely.”

I remember when a Boston hotel built a swimming pool that immediately overlooked the I95 Freeway right in the heart of the city. There were so many accidents the first month it was in use – from male drivers ogling the babes in bikinis – they were ordered by the city to close it back down.

It takes firefighters an hour to rescue truck driver – very carefully!

For more than an hour Friday morning a driver was stuck inside his tractor-trailer as it balanced precariously on the edge of a raised section of Interstate 40, with only thin air between portions of the truck and the pavement 40 feet below.

Firefighters not only freed him, but kept the rig from falling off the I-40 Crosstown bridge after a multiple-vehicle accident triggered by an erratic driver during morning rush hour downtown, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper said.

Firefighters broke a window and spoke to the driver as wreckers got into position and crews used cables and chains to secure the rig after the 8 a.m. crash. The driver, whose name has not been released, was lodged in the sleeping compartment of the cab and waited to be freed.

“He was scared to death in the truck thinking he was going to fall over the edge,” patrol Capt. Chris West said…

Fire Deputy Chief Marc Woodard said about 30 firefighters were involved in rescuing the driver.

Scary situation. I’d be afraid to fart.

French police fine Muslim woman for driving while wearing veil

A French Muslim woman has been fined for wearing a full-face veil while driving a car.

Police in the western city of Nantes said the veil – which showed only her eyes – restricted her vision and could have caused an accident.

The woman’s lawyer says they will appeal against the decision, which he described as a breach of human rights…

After stopping the 31-year-old woman – who has not been named – police asked her to raise her veil to confirm her identity, which she did.

They then fined her 22 euros, saying her clothing posed a “safety risk“.

“This fine is not justified on road safety grounds and constitutes a breach of human and women’s rights,” her lawyer, Jean-Michel Pollono, told AFP news agency.

He said the woman’s field of vision was not obstructed and added that a veil was no different from a motorcycle helmet in terms of hindrance to vision…

“The ball is clearly in the authorities’ court,” he said. “Currently no law forbids the wearing of the niqab…”

Think about it. Reflect. Who has reason on their side?

Video shows lorry pushing trapped car along motorway

A haulage firm began an investigation after a video emerged that appears to show a lorry driver speeding along a motorway unaware that a car was trapped under its bumper.

The mobile phone footage shows an Arclid Transport lorry travelling in the fast lane on the A1(M) near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, with a blue Renault Clio trapped sideways under its bumper.

The footage, believed to have been filmed in January by passengers in a vehicle on the same road, showed the driver of the Clio – who has not so far been identified – appearing to try to release the car by pressing the brakes…

It is believed the car driver emerged without any serious injuries once both vehicles had come to a stop. The footage was later posted on YouTube.

A spokesman for Cheshire-based Arclid Transport, which specialises in transporting bulk powders and granular products throughout the UK, said an investigation had begun…

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: “On 13 January at around 8.30am, we attended a road traffic collision on the southbound A1 near Wetherby, to a report that a blue Renault Clio had been in collision with an HGV…

“At the time of our attendance, there were no injuries and both vehicles were on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

“As a result, at the time, the incident was treated as a damage-only collision. However, in light of the new evidence, we are re-investigating the collision and the matter has been passed to our major collision inquiry team. Inquiries are ongoing.”

I can understand why the truck driver wouldn’t bring up any discussion of how the accident proceeded. Why did the Renault driver keep quiet, eh?

UPDATE: The driver of the Renault was Rona Williams. She was on her mobile begging for help about the time this video was shot.

ATL bus driver orders passengers to pray before they can exit??!!

A MARTA bus driver is on suspension following allegations that he forced passengers to pray before allowing them to exit the bus.

Christopher James was one of those passengers. James said, initially, he thought something was wrong when he rang the bell to get off the bus and the door didn’t open.

James said the bus driver asked him and three other passengers to join hands in prayer. James said the driver prayed with the group for about four minutes….

Cripes! One of those long-winded guys, too.

James’ cousin, who arrived at the bus stop to meet him, said she saw the men standing inside the bus, but didn’t realize they were praying.

“I was like, ‘Why were y’all praying on the bus? He said the man would not let them off the bus.”

And they wonder why nobody likes MARTA. Har!

French-only bus driver’s behavior under question

Montreal’s transit authority is investigating an incident in which a French-speaking bus driver ordered a man off for asking what time it was in English.

The incident happened early Sept. 4 when university student Muhammad Ahmad Munir, 32, asked the female driver for the time, The (Montreal) Gazette reported.

Munir said the driver answered in French and he told her he didn’t understand and asked for the time again.

He claims the driver then said “I don’t speak English,” and, in French, ordered him and about 20 other passengers off the bus. The driver also hit the vehicle’s panic button, which automatically summons police to the scene, the newspaper said…

And a good time was had by all…
