J.K. Rowling slams the ‘bunch of racists’ whose knickers are bunched over a Black Hermione

Noma Dumezweni
“…Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm”

J.K. Rowling was thrilled when black actor Noma Dumezweni was cast as adult Hermione Granger back in December, but sadly, many less open-minded people on Twitter weren’t. Several Harry Potter fans were upset that Hermione, who had been played in the films by Emma Watson, was now black in The Cursed Child play, but Rowling hit back, stating, “Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione.”

And with Harry Potter and The Cursed Child set to open in London on Tuesday, Rowling once again threw her support behind Dumezweni and dismissed the critics of the casting as “a bunch of racists.”

“Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job,” Rowling said in an interview with The Observer. “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with.

“But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm,” Rowling said.

The Harry Potter author…was sad to say she was unsurprised by the reaction to Dumezweni’s casting.

With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot. But what can you say? That’s the way the world is,” Rowling said.

Some of the worst stupid practices of our species will take centuries to lose. Racism, no doubt, is at the head of the list.

Yoga and Harry Potter are evil, says Pope’s champion exorcist

For most people it is a way of toning the limbs and soothing the stresses of everyday life, but the Catholic Church’s best-known exorcist says yoga is evil.

Father Gabriele Amorth, who for years was the Vatican’s chief exorcist and claims to have cleansed hundreds of people of evil spirits, said yoga is Satanic because it leads to a worship of Hinduism and “all eastern religions are based on a false belief in reincarnation”.

Reading JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books is no less dangerous, said the 86-year-old priest, who is the honorary president for life of the International Association of Exorcists, which he founded in 1990, and whose favourite film is the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist…

“Practising yoga is Satanic, it leads to evil just like reading Harry Potter,” he told a film festival in Umbria this week, where he was invited to introduce The Rite, a film about exorcism starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as a Jesuit priest.

“In Harry Potter the Devil acts in a crafty and covert manner, under the guise of extraordinary powers, magic spells and curses,” said the priest, who in 1986 was appointed the chief exorcist for the Diocese of Rome…

Father Amorth has previously said that people who are possessed by Satan vomit shards of glass and pieces of iron and have such superhuman strength that even children have to be held down by up to four people.

He has also claimed that the sex abuse scandals which have engulfed the Catholic Church in the US, Ireland, Germany and other countries was proof that the Anti-Christ is waging a war against the Holy See.

Being caught at criminal behavior apparently is just a result of the anti-christ plot. Uh-huh.

RTFA for more superstitious silliness.

Harry Popper condoms make you think of Harry Potter?

The manufacturer of Swiss condom brand called Harry Popper is being sued by Warner Brothers.

The packaging of the contraception shows a cartoon-like condom with round-rimmed Harry Potter-style glasses waving a magic wand.

The Hollywood studio is taking legal action against Magic X, the manufacturers, for copyright infringement.

The Cantonal Court in Schwyz will rule in the coming weeks on whether to ban the product.

The image of my client is in danger,” said a lawyer for Warner Bros. “This is clearly a reference to the film and fictional character Harry Potter.
Everyone who sees the condoms automatically thinks of Harry Potter.”

The lawyer for Magic X said: “Our product has nothing to do with Harry Potter.” The brand was launched in 2006 and the name was registered with Swissreg, the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property.

The series has originated an immense amount of tie-in merchandise and the Harry Potter brand is estimated to be worth £15 billion.

Yes, I understand the intellectual property rights as they relate to copyright and trademark.

It’s still bloody creative and more than a little funny. Kudos to Magic X.

Pope promotes priest praising Hurricane Katrina as retribution

He says, “Watch out for Harry Potter, too!”

Pope Benedict has…promoted ultra-conservative cleric Fr Gerhard Maria Wagner to assistant bishop of the Austrian city of Linz.

Fr Wagner is also notorious for his extreme views – he has accused the popular Harry Potter novels of spreading Satanism, and described Hurricane Katrina as God’s punishment for the sinners of New Orleans.

He wrote…that the death and destruction caused by the hurricane in New Orleans was divine retribution for the city’s tolerance of homosexuals and permissive sexual attitudes.

The future bishop said he was glad that Katrina destroyed not only nightclubs and brothels in New Orleans, but also five of the city’s abortion clinics.

I’m not certain if the Pope plans on taking his church back to the 18th Century – or the 14th.

Court delays Hari Puttar movie release

A court in India has postponed the release of a film entitled Hari Puttar, after complaints from the makers of the blockbuster Harry Potter films.

Hollywood company Warner Bros has filed a lawsuit against all parties involved in the production and distribution of the Hari Puttar film.

It has been quoted as saying the the title of the Indian movie is confusing.

Mirchi Movies, the makers of the Bollywood children’s film, have denied the accusations. It told the BBC that India’s Hari Puttar had nothing to do with the Harry Potter wizard movies, to which Warner Bros owns the rights.

Mirchi says that Hari is a popular Indian name, and Puttar means ‘son’ in Hindi and Punjabi.

The Indian film tells the story of a 10-year-old boy who moves to England with his family and becomes involved in a plan to save the world.

Warner Bros has a sense of humor only about things other than money. Since their universe is wholly concerned with money, they have no sense of humor about anything.
