Hundreds of thousands of children abused inside the French Catholic Church

An estimated 330,000 children were victims of sex abuse within France’s Catholic Church over the past 70 years, according to a report released Tuesday that represents the country’s first major accounting of the worldwide phenomenon.

The figure includes abuses committed by some 3,000 priests and other people involved in the church — wrongdoing that Catholic authorities covered up over decades in a “systemic manner,” according to the president of the commission that issued the report, Jean-Marc Sauvé…

The independent commission urged the church to take strong action, denouncing “faults” and “silence.” It also called on the Catholic Church to help compensate the victims, notably in cases that are too old to prosecute via the courts.

“The consequences are very serious,” Sauvé said. “About 60% of men and women who were sexually abused encounter major problems in their emotional or sexual life…”We consider the church has a debt towards victims,” he added.

The 2,500-page document was issued as the Catholic Church in France, like in other countries, seeks to face up to shameful secrets that were long covered up…

Francois Devaux, head of the victims’ group La Parole Libérée (The Liberated Word), said it was “a turning point in our history.”

He denounced the coverups that permitted “mass crimes for decades.”

“But even worse, there was a betrayal: betrayal of trust, betrayal of morality, betrayal of children, betrayal of innocence,” he said, calling on the church for compensation.

If there ever was a money-making operation that could afford to repay victims of crimes committed by the leaders, the authorities of that body, it is the Catholic Church. They rake it in every Sunday, regular as clockwork.

My only question is when will more brave victims come forward – in other nations?

Cardinal Dolan authorized payout for abusers when he was the Archbishop of Milwaukee

It’s good to be the Cardinal!

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York authorized payments of as much as $20,000 to sexually abusive priests as an incentive for them to agree to dismissal from the priesthood when he was the archbishop of Milwaukee.

Questioned at the time about the news that one particularly notorious pedophile cleric had been given a “payoff” to leave the priesthood, Cardinal Dolan, then the archbishop, responded that such an inference was “false, preposterous and unjust.”

But a document unearthed during bankruptcy proceedings for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and made public by victims’ advocates reveals that the archdiocese did make such payments to multiple accused priests to encourage them to seek dismissal, thereby allowing the church to remove them from the payroll.

A spokesman for the archdiocese confirmed on Wednesday that payments of as much as $20,000 were made to “a handful” of accused priests “as a motivation” not to contest being defrocked. The process, known as “laicization,” is a formal church juridical procedure that requires Vatican approval, and can take far longer if the priest objects…

Cardinal Dolan, who is president of the national bishops’ conference and fast becoming the nation’s most high-profile Roman Catholic cleric, did not respond to several requests for comment…

Experts in the Catholic Church’s response to sexual abuse say that payouts to dismissed priests are not uncommon. When a man becomes a priest, the church is expected to care for his needs for a lifetime…

The Milwaukee Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in January 2011, in the face of potential lawsuits by 23 accusers.

They will not be missed – at least not by their victims.

So, the church buys their way out of lifetime support for pedophile priests — and declares bankruptcy as a defense against caring for the victims of those priests.

FBI warns Barbie Doll may be used for child porn – Huh? Wha?

The FBI is warning law agencies that the new Barbie “Video Girl” doll could be used as a tool by pedophiles to make child pornography.

In an alert entitled “Barbie ‘Video Girl’ a Possible Child Pornography Production Method,” the FBI said the doll has a built-in hidden camera in the chest and a small LCD screen for video display in her back.

How “hidden” is a camera that’s hooked up to a screen in the doll’s back?

The FBI “cyber crime alert” doesn’t cite any misuse of the doll, which has been on the market since July, but talks about the possibility…

The FBI regularly distributes such alerts to help investigators improve policing. No incidents involving the new doll have been reported, according to Frederick Gutt and another FBI special agent, Steve Dupre…

The notice is written for law agencies only, but someone at the FBI mistakenly sent it to media outlets in Seattle, said Dupre of the FBI’s Sacramento, California, office, which distributed the notice.

This is another “what-if” scenario that truly illustrates what comes from coppers with too much time on their hands.

This is based on knowing that there once was a pedophile who gave a kid a Barbie Doll. And another where a pedophile used a hidden video camera. Therefore, we must live in fear and trepidation of someone combining the two.

Cripes. Let me repeat my favorite “what-if” story.

When Ruud Gullet was cratering in his gig as manager of the Fulham Football Club, he found himself in a press conference where a couple of reasonably sober members of the 4th Estate bombarded him with hypothetical questions and demanded resolution of the problems they offered.

He replied, “What if, what if, what if? If my auntie had balls she’d be my uncle!”

And if she had a video camera in her chest and belonged to a pedophile, she might be Barbie.

Abused boy scout awarded $18 million in further damages

A Multnomah County jury said the Boy Scouts of America must pay $18.5 million for the sexual abuse a former Scout suffered as a child — the largest such award levied against the organization.

Attorneys for the former Scout, 38-year-old Kerry Lewis, said the vast majority of sexual-abuse lawsuits against the Boy Scouts of America since the 1980s have settled quietly, and the issue largely has stayed out of the national spotlight. They said Friday’s verdict, however, exposed the organization’s dark history with pedophiles and its unwillingness to come to terms with the problem.

“What we saw here in Portland has really pulled back the covers on the Boy Scouts of America,” said Paul Mones, one of Lewis’ attorneys, speaking to a crowd of local and national reporters. Mones said that although he considers the organization generally safe, it needs “to be open and honest” about pedophiles who are drawn to its volunteer ranks…

Lewis and his attorneys said they hoped the verdict would make Scouting safer.

If I was able to help save one person, this was all worth it,” Lewis said.

Oregon law requires that 60 percent — or $11.1 million of the $18.5 million punitive-damages verdict — goes to the state’s crime victim’s compensation fund…

As long as the BSA sticks to denial, refuses to face the fact that their inaction has perpetuated the problem – the lawsuits will continue to mount up. The potential service the organization offers will continue to diminish.

Need to hide abusive Irish priests? Send ’em to America!

A Waltham-based group that has been chronicling the US clergy sexual abuse scandal has released the names of 60 to 70 accused priests it says were born in Ireland or are of Irish descent who came to the United States and were reoffenders.

The group,, demanded that Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston and Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence immediately make public the names of any credibly accused Irish priests who have worked in their dioceses.

By revealing the names, the group said it hopes to highlight the issue of immigrant Irish priests who are known pedophiles and whose histories of alleged abuse have long been “outsourced’’ to the United States

“Bishops [in Ireland], just like bishops here, have been moving accused priests around, even though they know they are dangerous,’’ said Terence McKiernan of “Unfortunately the places where they put them include our own backyard. So the Irish crisis, basically, has become our crisis, too.’’

Standing before the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, members and supporters of the group said the Irish scandal is deeply linked to the US abuse crisis because priests trained in Irish seminaries are systematically sent to serve in America, including clergy with long histories of abuse.

They also called on Prime Minister Brian Cowen of Ireland to recognize his country’s responsibility to inform the American public of all child-molesting clergy from Irish dioceses and religious orders who have immigrated to US dioceses.

RTFA. No surprises. No real solutions offered by the church.

The sickest part remains politicians both sides of the pond who maintain their collusion with the Catholic Church over the crimes.

Irish police, Irish church, worked together to cover up child sex

Ireland’s police colluded with the Catholic church in covering up clerical child abuse in Dublin on a huge scale, according to a damning report on decades of sex crimes committed by priests.

The devastating report on the sexual and physical abuse of children by the clergy in Ireland’s capital from 1975 to 2004 accuses four former archbishops, a host of clergy and senior members of the Garda Síochána of a cover-up.

The three-volume report found that the “maintenance of secrecy, the avoidance of scandal, the protection of the reputation of the church and the preservation of its assets” was more important than justice for the victims…

Rather than investigate complaints from children, gardai simply reported the matter to the Dublin Catholic diocese, the report says. The Garda Síochána is accused of connivance with the church in stifling at least one complaint of abuse and letting the alleged perpetrator flee the country.

Irish justice minister, Dermot Ahern said there should be no hiding place for abusers. “The persons who committed these dreadful crimes will continue to be pursued. They must come to know that there is no hiding place. That justice – even where it may have been delayed – will not be denied,” he said…

The report states that senior clerical figures covered up the abuse over nearly 30 years and that the structures and rules of the church facilitated that cover-up. It says that state authorities facilitated the cover-up by allowing the church to be beyond the reach of the law.

How can you be assured a police body is doing their job – when you discover a whole body of criminal responsibility is corrupt? As corrupt as the pedophiles they should have been investigating.
