Uncovering a murder — 430,000 years ago

The first known murder was just as brutal as any other. The attacker smashed the victim twice in the head, leaving matching holes above the victim’s left eyebrow. The dead body was then dropped down a 43-foot shaft into a cave—where it lay for nearly half a million years…

Paleontologists pieced together the 430,000-year-old skull and reported their forensic analysis Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. Injuries to the skull represent the oldest direct evidence of homicide, the scientists say…

The…skull comes from the Sima de los Huesos, or “Pit of Bones,” site in Spain, where paleontologists have found the remains of at least 28 individuals…Exactly what to call the Sima de los Huesos people has been debated, but Nohemi Sala, lead author of the study, and her colleagues identify them as members of the species Homo heidelbergensis, an early human ancestor that gave rise to the Neanderthals.

Read on. The forensics are good enough for Inspector Morse.

Thieves get to fatal crash in Carlsbad, NM, before coppers — steal the victim’s tires, rims

If you’re coming to visit the Carlsbad Caverns – try not to have an accident on the way

When Carlsbad police heard of a fatal car crash Wednesday morning, they weren’t expecting what they saw when they arrived on the scene. Parts of the victim’s car were missing – an indication that someone had not only found the man hours earlier, but had also stolen from him in what were perhaps his last moments.

Steven Roy Reese, 26, of Carlsbad, was reportedly traveling southbound on the dirt road adjacent to the irrigation canal between Lea Street and Boyd Drive when he lost control of his vehicle, according to a press release from the Carlsbad Police Department. Officers believe Reese overcorrected to regain control, causing his 1996 Ford Explorer to flip two times and land on top of him. Reese was dead when police arrived on the scene, and a report from the Office of the Medical Investigator revealed Reese had been dead for approximately 8-12 hours before police found him…

Some time during the night, an unknown person reportedly removed Goodyear Wrangler tires, two Ford factory aluminum wheels and the battery from Reese’s 1996 Ford Explorer. This behavior is certainly unusual, Carlsbad police Lt. Jennifer Moyers said, and extremely insensitive.

The area in which the accident happened, about half a mile south of Lea Street, is not well traveled, so it’s not unusual that the police weren’t called immediately after the crash took place, Moyers said.

“But typically when we have something like this happen, people call in right away. It’s terrible,” she said of the thief who she believes may have found the car lying on its side during the night.

Moyers said the person who stole the parts from Reese’s car could definitely face criminal charges. “There could be a couple of charges – theft and failure to give notice of the accident,” she said.

If the person tries to sell the stolen items, that would be an additional offense as well, Moyers said.

Life in the American West?

Hit-and-run driver tries to escape with most of his victim’s body

A suspected drunken driver struck and killed a pedestrian on a Houston freeway early Tuesday, then drove for several miles after the victim had crashed through the windshield and landed next to the passenger’s seat, authorities said.

The driver, James Onak, 49, faces a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid in a fatality and a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, said Donna Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Onak had an attorney…

The collision severed one of the victim’s legs and sent the rest of his body through the windshield. It landed under the dashboard, on the passenger’s side floorboard, authorities said.

Onak drove for about three miles before a Harris County Precinct 8 deputy constable noticed heavy damage to the front of his vehicle and pulled him over at about 12:40 a.m., said Capt. Jason Finnen, with the constable’s office…

“It wasn’t until the driver stepped out that the deputy could see what had happened,” Finnen said. “Because of the impact, the body was positioned up under the dashboard on the passenger’s side floorboard.”

Onak told the deputy he had hit something while traveling on the freeway but was not aware it was a person, Finnen said.

Another unit was sent back to the freeway, where the victim’s severed leg and the vehicle’s license plate were discovered…

The deputy indicated that Onak appeared to be intoxicated, Finnen said. A blood sample was taken from Onak but Hawkins declined to say what the results of the test were.

Hit-and-run drivers are especially disgusting. But, this scumbag – running off with the remains of his victim in the car – is particularly contemptible. Drunk is no excuse. Not noticing the body? Give me a break.

Give us all a break. Throw away the key.

Cannibal arrested after “dinner” sends in substitute copper

A suspected cannibal was arrested in Slovakia after his ‘dinner guest’ changed his mind and alerted police.

The would-be victim from Switzerland answered an internet advert from the 43-year-old man seeking a person who would agree to be killed, cooked and eaten.

He claims he thought the offer was nothing more than a ‘macabre fantasy game’.

But after telephone conversations with the unnamed man, he realised he was “deadly serious”, he said.

He alerted Swiss police who informed their Slovakian counterparts…They sent in an undercover officer posing as the victim in a sting operation to catch the suspected cannibal.

During the arrest, a gunfight ensued in which the cannibal and a police officer were both injured…

A Kysak police spokesman said: “One of our officers and the suspect both suffered gunshot wounds during the arrest and are both being treated in hospital.”

I presume they’re both being treated tenderly.

Thugs shoot robbery victim, flee with dough. Pizza dough.

How did the mugger botch the robbery of a Staten Island pizza man? He grabbed the wrong bag of dough, of course…

Salvatore LaRosa and an unidentified accomplice allegedly followed the owners of Brother’s Pizzeria home on June 30, 2008. They put on masks and confronted the victims at gunpoint in their driveway, according to a complaint unsealed Monday in Brooklyn Federal Court.

The assailants demanded one of the shopkeepers hand over a bag – thinking it contained the day’s proceeds, officials said. “The bag that was stolen contained pizza dough,” Drug Enforcement Administration agent Kristie Osswald stated in the complaint.

Even though it wasn’t cash, the robbery victim resisted and was shot twice in the legs.

This creep managed a get-out-of-jail card by fronting a $1 million bail order from the Federal Court. Poisonally, I think they should lock him up and throw away the key. He shot the poor bugger he robbed.

Aside from being stupid, he’s still a danger to society.

Tea Party goons stomp woman at Kentucky debate – UPDATED

While the Kentucky Senatorial debate on Monday night was markedly more cordial than usual, a fight that broke out before the event was anything but.

A female MoveOn.org activist was stomped on by a supporter of Kentucky GOP candidate Rand Paul after she attempted to approach him before his final debate with Democrat Jack Conway…

The 24-year-old woman with the liberal group, identified as Lauren Valle by local media, tripped and fell after someone ripped a blond wig off her head. She is then seen on video being wrestled to a curb by one man. After she is placed face down, another man stomps on her shoulder and head with his foot…

Police said Valle was trying to get a photo with the Tea Party favorite holding a sign that said “employee of the month award.” The satirical prize was from Republicorp, a fake business MoveOn created to symbolize what it says is a cozy relationship between corporate America and the GOP…

“She was subsequently stopped and thrown to the ground by a group of individuals who were gathered there for the debate,” police information officer Sherelle Roberts said. “It was caught on video. You can see the woman being thrown to the ground, there was a gentleman who stepped on her head…”

The man who stomped on her has not yet been identified. Police said they are searching for him…

Paul’s campaign released a statement on the melee, calling it “incredibly unfortunate.”

Most “unfortunate” – is that it was recorded. Unlike back in the day – when civil rights activists were often beaten by racist gangs. Nowadays, every group seems to contain a few people with video cameras. Even the lowly cell phone often has video capability.

Some of those videographers are there to record attacks on citizens – to be shared with their bubbas. Some are there to record predictable assaults by police generally in place to maintain law and order on behalf of rightwing politicians.

Respectable “analysts” will fall over themselves, today, making it their duty to blather about the ordinary Americans who make up the Tea Party Movement. Balderdash. Yes, there also were average Americans who populated the White Citizens Council and the Klan, the John Birch Society and Minutemen. There are typical Americans who join militant anti-abortion crusades that deliver murder to the medical community, as well.

They willingly joined the generalized fear, cowardice and anger that characterizes the American right wing. Where’s the surprise at violent attacks? Just another debate tactic for teabaggers.

UPDATE: Thanks to the comment from “bubby” identifying the attackers – including an official of the Rand Paul campaign.

Xbox thief gets himself busted online

Dumb Crook of the Day?

Another video game-loving thief was caught online! Police nabbed a careless electronics thief who used a stolen Xbox for online play — allowing investigators to uncover a stockpile of pilfered goods he had allegedly stowed away in his grandmother’s house.

On the day of the burglary, the victim used another Xbox to go online and spotted his videogame console in use, according to the Post. Investigators then tracked the IP address to a Pelham home where 22-year-old Jeremiah Gilliam is accused of hiding the goods he stole from as many as 200 car break-ins and burglaries in Westchester County.

The suspect purportedly used his grandma’s residence as a stash house for dozens of video games, laptops, GPS devices, Xboxes, PlayStations and credit cards.

Guess his grandma thought he had lots of gift-giving friends, eh?

Dumb crook of the day!

A New Zealand rape victim drove her rapist to a police station when he fell asleep in his car after assaulting the woman.

Vipul Sharma, 22, was found guilty of abduction and two charges of rape by the Auckland District Court Tuesday, court officials told Reuters.

The New Zealand newspaper said Sharma met the woman at an Auckland bar in 2006 and later drove her first to a park where he raped her in the back seat of his car.

After the attack Sharma allowed the woman to drive and fell asleep in the passenger seat, so the woman drove him to Auckland Central police station where he was arrested.

She showed a lot of bravery and common sense. I have nothing but respect for what she has endured,” police detective Simon Welsh told the newspaper.

Bravo. The only addition I can think of to this almost-happy ending would have been slamming his whatchamacallit in the car door.

Thanks, Mr. Justin

13-year-old girl charges rape – then, she’s killed for adultery

A 13-year-old girl who said she had been raped was stoned to death in Somalia after being accused of adultery by Islamic militants.

Dozens of men stoned Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow to death in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators in the southern port city of Kismayo, Amnesty International and Somali media reported, citing witnesses. The Islamic militia in charge of Kismayo had accused her of adultery after she reported that three men had raped her.

Calls to Somali government officials and the local administration in Kismayo rang unanswered Saturday.

Somalia is among the world’s most violent and impoverished countries. The nation of some 8 million people has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991 then turned on each other.

A quarter of Somali children die before age 5; nearly every public institution has collapsed. Fighting is a daily occurrence, with violent deaths reported nearly every day.

Ain’t no one making a movie called, “It’s a Wonderful Life” in Somalia in the near future.

Not any regime change likely, either. No oil.

Romanian child rape victim allowed abortion

A Romanian government committee has decided to allow a pregnant 11-year-old who was raped by her teenage uncle to have an abortion, a government spokesman said Friday.

The girl is 21 weeks pregnant — too far along to have an abortion in Romania, where the limit is 14 weeks unless the pregnancy poses problems for the mother’s health, said the spokesman.

The girl’s parents had said they would take their daughter to Britain for an abortion if the committee did not allow her to have one in Romania. Abortions are legal in Britain up to 24 weeks…

Church groups have opposed an abortion for the girl, the government spokesman said. The Romanian Orthodox Church has urged the girl to keep the baby, and has said it will take care of the baby if the family wants to give it up for adoption, he said.

Still, she’s lucky not to live in South Dakota. Here’s their law as interpreted by a leading member of the SD State Senate:

“A real-life description [of a candidate for abortion] to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.”

Some of these cretins haven’t yet made it out of the 14th Century.
