❝ During the campaign, President Donald Trump promised to build a wall across the southern border some 1,000 miles long. The number of miles the president currently has money for: seven.
United States Customs and Border Protection officials delivered the startling news…at a conference in San Antonio for businesses eager to win contracts for beefing up security along the border.
❝ Although estimates to build the wall soar past $20 billion, the agency has so far managed to scrape together only about $20 million, according to its top contracting official. The rest of the cash will have to come from Congress, which so far has proven reluctant to foot the bill.
That amount of cash would not go very far to build a real wall — existing fence along the border costs roughly $2.8 million per mile.
Instead, the agency plans to spend the money on eight model walls, planning, engineering, and early-stage land acquisition…
So, the money will either come out of taxpayers’ pockets directly – or the usual way favored by Congressional conservatives, e.g. rip it from budgets already dedicated to education, healthcare, etc. You know. Stuff that benefits ordinary people. Not corporate elites.
❝ The contracts for the prototype walls — some made of concrete, some made of other materials, all to be “aesthetically pleasing” per Trump’s wishes for a beautiful wall — will be announced later this summer…
Like most of everything Trump owes obedient voters, True Believers in our nation unwinding time back to some 19th Century myth – it ain’t going to happen. It will cost exponentially more than promised. It will take money stolen from healthcare, decent roads, education, a poison-free environment. Nothing the Republican Party has cared about in decades. Everything this generation and those to follow will require if America is to keep from falling backwards compared to the rest of the developed and developing world.
❝ Born in the ashes of the smoldering South after the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan died and was reborn before losing the fight against civil rights in the 1960s. Membership dwindled, a unified group fractured, and one-time members went to prison for a string of murderous attacks against blacks. Many assumed the group was dead, a white-robed ghost of hate and violence.
Yet today, the KKK is still alive and dreams of restoring itself to what it once was: an invisible white supremacist empire spreading its tentacles throughout society. As it marks 150 years of existence, the Klan is trying to reshape itself for a new era…
❝ In a series of interviews with The Associated Press, Klan leaders said they feel that U.S. politics are going their way, as a nationalist, us-against-them mentality deepens across the nation. Stopping or limiting immigration — a desire of the Klan dating back to the 1920s — is more of a cause than ever…
❝ Joining the Klan is as easy as filling out an online form — provided you’re white and Christian. Members can visit an online store to buy one of the Klan’s trademark white cotton robes for $145, though many splurge on the $165 satin version…
“While today’s Klan has still been involved in atrocities, there is no way it is as violent as the Klan of the ’60s,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, an advocacy group that tracks activity by groups it considers extremist. “That does not mean it is some benign group that does not engage in political violence,” he added.
Historian David Cunningham, author of “Klansville, U.S.A.: The Rise and Fall of the Civil Rights-Era Ku Klux Klan,” notes that while the Klan generally doesn’t openly advocate violence, “I do think we have the sort of ‘other’ model of violence, which is creating a culture that supports the commission of violence in the name of these ideas.”…
❝ The Alabama-based SPLC says there’s no evidence the Klan is returning to the strength of its heyday. It estimates the Klan has about 190 chapters nationally with no more than 6,000 members total, which would be a mere shadow of its estimated 2 million to 5 million members in the 1920s.
“The idea of unifying the Klan like it was in the ’20s is a persistent dream of the Klan, but it’s not happening,” Potok said…
❝ The current hot-button issue for Klan members — fighting immigration and closing U.S. borders — is one of the most talked-about topics in the presidential election. Klan leaders say Donald Trump’s immigration position and his ascendancy in the GOP are signs things are going their way.
“You know, we began 40 years ago saying we need to build a wall,” Arkansas-based Klan leader Thomas Robb said…
Candyass commentators, TV talking heads with about as much backbone as an earthworm, legitimize and reinforce the supposed new respectability of racist groups like the KKK and their Nazi kin. If you’re afraid to challenge the racism and bigotry of Donald Trump because he might not grant your network another interview – all you do is diminish and destroy the premise of the Fourth Estate, the mandate for a Free Press as gadfly and truth-teller.
No, TV anchors aren’t required to censor the sleaze that spews from politicians who cater to the coyness of white supremacist code words. Challenging bigotry simply needs backbone more than a bankbook built on ad space.
An East Naples man is accused of knocking his mother unconscious after she became angry with him for practicing martial arts in the house.
Cory William Morrel, 27, of the 7800 block of Regal Heron Circle, was arrested Friday by Collier County sheriff’s deputies at home.
According to a Sheriff’s Office report, deputies were dispatched to Morrel’s home in reference to a woman who was kicked in the head…
Morrel told deputies that while practicing martial arts in the living room, he accidentally kicked a wall causing a scuff mark. He said his mother became angry with him and began yelling profanity at him.
It is unclear what happened next due to redacted information regarding Morrel kicking his mother in the head. However, Morrel said he then called 911 when she became unconscious.
She was transported to an NCH hospital for further medical treatment.
Morrel faces a charge of domestic battery.
Another story of a loving son.
Two police officers face investigation after they stopped a suspected drink-driver, then wrote off his sports car by crashing through a garden wall.
The high-powered Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was driven across a grass verge, then across the garden of one luxury home and through the neighbouring garden’s fence before ending up on its side.
Both officers were found inside the vehicle. One suffered minor injuries and the other was severely shaken.
They had stopped the car for driving erratically at around 2.15am on Hale Road in Hale, Cheshire. The 23-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and his car was impounded…sort of.
Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts from GMP, said: “I can assure the local community that this incident will be rigorously investigated.
The drunk driver is still in the slammer. The coppers have been, uh, suspended from driving duties.
A hapless thief drilled his way into a French bank at the weekend, but missed the safe and instead found himself in a lavatory where he was promptly arrested.
The 21-year-old broke into a building adjoining a branch of Banque Populaire in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille in the early hours of Saturday morning, La Provence newspaper said.
The paper said the man, who came from Belgium and was not named, thought that he was going to end up in a room housing safe deposit boxes but instead drilled into the lavatories.
Alarms were triggered when he broke through the wall and police caught the man when they arrived on the scene.
Gotta buy one of those new-fangled GPS units, dude!
