DIY paint-on Faraday Cage for your home

Researchers say they have created a special kind of paint which can block out wireless signals.

It means security-conscious wireless users could block their neighbours from being able to access their home network – without having to set up encryption.

Of course, this should read, “in addition to encryption” to keep the Feds from beaming directly into your network.

The paint contains an aluminium-iron oxide which resonates at the same frequency as wi-fi – or other radio waves – meaning the airborne data is absorbed and blocked.

By coating an entire room, signals can’t get in and, crucially, can’t get out.

Developed at the University of Tokyo, the paint could cost as little as £10 per kilogram.

No doubt you can conjure up additional features and benefits.

No doubt.

So, essentially this will block your TV, radio (unless you get these over cable) and mobile phone signals as well.

    Just loved this one:

“We’re not sure about the true effects of electromagnetic waves, in this range, on the human body.

“We’re assuming that excessive exposure could be bad for us. Therefore we’re trying to make protective clothes for young children or pregnant women to help protect their bodies from such waves.”

I’m sure the kids and pregnant women will feel more comfortable having their clothes impregnated with this chemical cocktail… 😉

Shielded paint is not new. It’s only advantage is that it is usually cheaper than older shielding methods.

As the article points out, there are many down sides, including blocking cell phone calls too. Wait, maybe some would find that a good thing. 🙂

“Resonates”? I would have thought the paint grounded the signal.

Like it was highlighted earlier the RF paint is nothing new. Moreover, RF paint is only effective at blocking the specific frequency it was made for. Therefore wifi paint (2.4GHz) can not filter out cellular phones (860-900MHz). Your best bet would to make a Faraday cage around the electronic device you would want to shield. However, like it was noted in the article, this would also shield out any signal exiting the cage, ex: you trying to call someone. I wrote an interesting article on the Faraday Cage Principle, come and read it!

First things first – to acrylic paint well, you have to paint like you do not pay for the color! If you want a nice paint finish, you must apply the right amount of color. You do not spread paint just because you want to save money or for some other reason. For color and we forget the cost of paint and apply a nice, smooth, thick layer.
