Santa Fe New Mexican 8/25/17: “Probe spreads to land owned by paramilitary sect” http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/probe-spreads-to-land-owned-by-paramilitary-sect/article_bb16ebde-8723-5efd-8dbd-6fc89411998e.html
“Leaders of a paramilitary religious sect rocked by child sexual abuse allegations say they were merely a small, poor group living in a secluded ranching area in New Mexico while constantly being persecuted by people who didn’t understand their reading of the Bible.
But authorities say the trustees of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps own thousands of acres of land and benefited from a wealthy high-ranking member who aided them in avoiding law enforcement agencies by hiding children throughout their vast holdings.
Those holdings and regular deceptions by leaders, authorities said, made it difficult for the small Cibola County Sheriff’s Office to investigate allegations of child abuse that former members say went back years.
Speaking before a judge on Friday, Cibola County Undersheriff Michael Munk gave a glimpse into his department’s two-year investigation of a militant sect former members say treated followers like slaves and often physically beat children who had no records of being born. That investigation led to the Sunday raid of the group’s Fence Lake compound and the arrest of four members.”

“Meet your local extremist groups : With violent rhetoric surging since Trump’s election, it helps to know your neighbors.” http://www.hcn.org/articles/politics-anti-government-groups-in-the-west-right-now
As investigations continue into the Trump team’s potential collusion with Russia during his presidential campaign, raising the prospect of impeachment or indictments. Roger Stone, a former adviser and longtime confidant to Trump, recently told a reporter with TMZ that an impeachment of the president would cause “a spasm of violence in this country, an insurrection like you’ve never seen.” See http://www.tmz.com/2017/08/24/roger-stone-impeach-trump-civil-war-violence/
Stone also supported Trump’s recent pardon of former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted in federal court for criminal contempt. Stone is now urging a pardon for Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who is about to go on trial for leading an armed confrontation with federal employees. Given Stone’s insurrection statement, the push for presidential pardons in spite of federal court orders, and a spike in hate or bias incidents following the election, it’s worth understanding some of the key players of anti-federal ideology, hate and extremism in the West today.

President Donald Trump will be the first sitting president to address the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit, which the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) described as a “rogues’ gallery of the radical right.” Trump will be the keynote speaker at Friday’s event, which will also be attended by his former strategist, Steve Bannon. Other speakers include the founder of anti-Islam group ACT for America and former Trump strategist, Sebastian Gorka.
The anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council, labeled as a hate group by the SPLC, has hosted its annual summit since its inception in 2006. (Newsweek 10/12/17) http://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-speak-anti-lgbt-hate-groups-annual-event-first-president-683927
“Trump To Values Voters: In America ‘We Don’t Worship Government, We Worship God'” (NPR 10/13/17) http://www.npr.org/2017/10/13/557459193/trump-set-to-address-values-voter-summit-for-first-time-as-president 80 percent of white evangelicals cast their vote for Trump last November, according to exit polls. That’s a higher percentage than supported President George W. Bush in 2004, Sen. John McCain in 2008 or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2012.

  4. Update says:

(Feb 20, 2019): The number of hate groups in the United States has reached a record high : Experts fear members of white nationalist groups in particular, many of them disillusioned with the political system, could incite violence. https://thinkprogress.org/number-of-hate-groups-united-states-record-high-e44749ad4754/ The SPLC’s annual Year in Hate and Extremism report, released Wednesday, recorded 1,020 hate groups in the United States in 2018. That figure includes neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and anti-government extremists, and represents a rise of seven percent from 2017. https://www.splcenter.org/sites/default/files/intelligence_report_166.pdf The SPLC’s concerns are backed up by another report on far right violence released by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in January. According to that report, almost every extremist-related murder committed in the United States in 2018 was carried out by an individual who was either directly linked or affiliated with the far right. In the lone exception, the perpetrator was affiliated with the far right before switching over to Islamic extremism just prior to carrying out a murder. https://thinkprogress.org/adl-report-far-right-violent-threat-attacks-plots-foiled-8648bf7f758e/
